Max Verstappen unleashed a masterclass under the Jeddah floodlights on Saturday evening, snatching pole position for the 2025 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix with a heart-stopping lap that left McLaren’s Oscar Piastri reeling.
After a torrid week for Red Bull, marred by a lackluster Bahrain outing and swirling rumors about Verstappen’s future, the four-time world champion delivered a defiant riposte.
His blistering 1:27.294 lap around the treacherous Jeddah Corniche Circuit edged Piastri by a mere 0.010 seconds, a margin so fine it had the paddock and fans on tenterhooks.
The Dutchman’s 42nd career pole was Verstappen at his audacious best, silencing doubters and reminding everyone why he’s the man to beat.
The four-time world champion’s triumph was all the more poignant against McLaren’s dominance in practice, where Piastri and teammate Lando Norris had set a ferocious pace.
But Norris, grappling with self-confessed confidence issues, saw his run for pole end in tears. His Q3 flyer ended in disaster at Turn 5, where he clipped the wall through the tricky complex, triggering a red flag and leaving his McLaren stranded.
“Fucking idiot,” Norris fumed over the radio, his frustration palpable. Starting 10th, the championship leader faces an uphill battle on Sunday, with overtaking opportunities typically few and far between at Jeddah.
George Russell continued Mercedes’ resurgence, securing third to underline their growing threat. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, ever consistent, claimed fourth, ensuring the second row bristles with pedigree.
Row three brings fresh narratives: Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s fifth place for Mercedes showcases his rookie promise, while Carlos Sainz, thriving at Williams, notched his best qualifying of 2025 in sixth.
Lewis Hamilton, who’d downplayed his chances of even reaching Q3, battled to seventh in his Ferrari, outpacing Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, who rounded out the top nine despite a chaotic Q1 moment when his team sent him out with a tyre blanket still attached.
Norris’ crash opened the door for others, but Alex Albon will rue missing the Q3 cut, settling for 11th alongside Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson.
Fernando Alonso, in 13th, led a lackluster Aston Martin showing, with Isack Hadjar and Oliver Bearman also falling in Q2.
At the back, Sauber’s woes deepened – Nico Hulkenberg languished in 18th, and Gabriel Bortoleto spun on his final Q1 lap to start last, sandwiching Haas’ Esteban Ocon with Alpine’s Jack Doohan and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll just ahead.
