Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli delivered a breakout performance in Sprint Qualifying at the Miami Grand Prix, claiming a sensational maiden pole for Saturday’s Sprint race.
The 18-year-old Italian produced a commanding 1m26.482s lap late in the final SQ3 segment, narrowly edging out both McLaren drivers in a tense and closely fought finale.
Oscar Piastri came closest to dethroning Antonelli with a time just 0.045s shy of the rookie’s benchmark, while teammate Lando Norris was a mere 0.100s behind, locking out second and third for McLaren.
Reigning World Champion Max Verstappen could only manage fourth, as he struggled to match the late-session pace of his rivals in increasingly optimal track conditions.
Antonelli’s Mercedes teammate George Russell was fifth-fastest, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton lined up sixth and seventh respectively.
Alex Albon delivered another impressive showing for Williams in eighth, with Racing Bulls stand-in Isack Hadjar grabbing ninth in a remarkable comeback after early struggles in SQ1. Fernando Alonso rounded out the top 10 for Aston Martin.
The SQ3 shootout played out strategically, with only Verstappen and Russell taking to the track early. Russell initially led the Dutchman by nearly three-tenths, but the late runners found the track at its quickest.
Verstappen attempted a second flying lap but fell short as Antonelli seized his opportunity with a clean and rapid final effort. The teenager’s fist-pumping celebration underscored the magnitude of his achievement — his first pole at just his fourth Formula 1 weekend.
Earlier, SQ2 claimed a few surprises as Nico Hulkenberg, Esteban Ocon, Pierre Gasly, Liam Lawson, and Carlos Sainz were eliminated. Norris had topped that segment, trailed by Verstappen, Piastri, and Antonelli.
SQ1, as always, featured a chaotic battle for track space. Antonelli again led the way early, with rapid track evolution prompting nearly the entire field to attempt a second run.
But traffic and time constraints thwarted several drivers. Jack Doohan, Yuki Tsunoda, Gabriel Bortoleto, and Oliver Bearman were all eliminated after failing to start a second timed lap, while Hadjar recovered from a scruffy initial run to scrape into SQ2 in eighth.
With Antonelli leading the field and McLaren closely behind, Saturday’s Sprint race over 19 laps promises a fierce midfield scrap and a tantalising showdown at the front.
The race kicks off at noon local time as Formula 1’s Miami weekend continues to deliver drama in the heat of South Florida.
