Ferrari called upon to rescue F1 legend from Italian roadblock

Formula 1 World Champion Jody Scheckter has conquered high-speed circuits across the globe, tamed snarling turbocharged beasts, and once brought Ferrari its last title before a 21-year drought – but now finds himself outwitted by Italian bureaucracy.

The South African-born racing legend, who recently traded the rolling fields of Hampshire for the rustic beauty of Liguria, Italy, has found himself in a rather unexpected bind: he no longer has a valid driver’s licence.

With his UK license expired and his Italian as shaky as a rookie’s first lap, Scheckter is stuck in the pits, and has called on Ferrari’s legal department to help him navigate the road to a new permit.

For a man who once rocketed down Monza’s straights at 300 km/h, being stumped by a basic theory test seems wildly ironic. One imagines Italy’s traffic authorities politely telling the world champion to prove he knows what a roundabout is – in fluent Italian, no less.

Still a Gentleman But No Longer a Farmer

Scheckter’s Italian relocation came after a significant chapter closed in the UK. Having settled there post-retirement, he built the renowned Laverstoke Park Farm, a pioneering organic farm in Hampshire.

A passion project-turned-enterprise, it won acclaim for its holistic farming practices and produced everything from buffalo mozzarella to beer.

But after years of effort, Scheckter made the difficult decision to shut the operation down, citing the tough financial climate for agriculture in Britain.

“It just didn’t make sense to keep going,” he said in earlier interviews. The closure prompted a fresh start – and a move back to the country where he reached F1 immortality.

Ferrari to the Rescue?

Scheckter has reached out to his former allies at Ferrari – but not for a quote on a ravishing 812 Competizione. This time, he’s hoping the House of Maranello’s influence can get him legally back behind the wheel.

“I have chosen Italy as my country, I want to live here,” Scheckter told Corriere della Sera.

“I was able to drive with my license for a year, but now it has expired. The problem is that I speak very poor Italian, I can’t possibly pass the test,” his candor revealing the absurdity of a 10-time Grand Prix winner flummoxed by a language barrier.

Social media buzzed with amused sympathy, one X post joking, “Jody Scheckter, outraced by Italian bureaucracy—Ferrari, get this man a license!”

While Liguria’s winding roads beckon, Scheckter’s plea is a humorous reminder that even champions can be humbled by paperwork.
