The F1 paddock is always a hotbed of sensational predictions, and the latest outlandish conjecture has been offered by former Red Bull mechanic Calum Nicholas.
The former senior power unit assembly technician, one of the most recognizable faces in the Red Bull team has made his call: Max Verstappen will win the 2025 world championship and then promptly walk away from the sport!
Nine races into the 2025 season, Verstappen trails McLaren’s Oscar Piastri by a hefty 49 points in the Drivers’ Championship. McLaren’s MCL39 is comprehensively dominating the grid, while Red Bull and Verstappen continue to struggle with an inconsistent and temperamental RB2.
Speaking recently on a podcast, Calum delivered his prediction with the confidence of Max betting his helmet on a one-lap qualifying miracle.
“I think Max is going to win the Drivers’ this year, and then I think he’s going to call it a day,” Nicholas declared. “To not back Max is just lunacy, I think. Lunacy!”

The prediction, while audacious given McLaren's current form and Verstappen's significant points disadvantage, underscores the sheer improbability of the scenario.
For such an outcome to materialize, McLaren would need to trip over their own shoelaces –spectacularly, while Max would need to wring every ounce of magic from the misfiring RB21 to close that 49-point gap, and then some.
As for Verstappen retiring? That’s about as likely as a safety car leading a race from start to finish. The Dutchman, still in his prime at 27, thrives on the thrill of competition, trash-talking rivals, and rewriting record books.
Walking away after a hard-fought title would be like a chef quitting after perfecting the ultimate stroopwafel recipe – unthinkable!
Verstappen’s hunger for speed and Red Bull’s backing make Callum’s retirement talk sound like a pit lane prank gone too far.
But then again, Verstappen pulling off a title win and a mic-drop retirement wouldn’t be the craziest thing we’ve seen in F1. So, who knows, Calum Nicholas might just have the last laugh.
