The FIA has approved Red Bull’s request to grant its highly rated British junior driver, Arvid Lindblad, an FIA Super Licence, making the 17-year-old eligible to participate in a Formula 1 practice session ahead of his 18th birthday on August 8.
The decision, finalized at the FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting in Macau on Tuesday, marks a significant milestone for the Formula 2 standout, who has been fast-tracked to complement Red Bull’s driver lineup.
With this exemption, Lindblad joins an elite group of young talents, following in the footsteps of Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who received a similar dispensation in 2024.
The FIA released the following statement regarding the WMSC’s decision:
"The FIA has received a request to grant a Super Licence to Arvid Lindblad prior to his 18th birthday,” it said.
“After considering the information presented in support of this request, the World Council found that the driver has recently and consistently demonstrated outstanding ability and maturity in single-seater formula car competition and therefore approved the request."
This Superlicence approval now opens the door for Lindblad to serve as an additional F1 reserve driver option for both Red Bull and Racing Bulls, two months ahead of schedule.
The young Briton He will join existing reserve driver Ayumu Iwasa, who currently competes in Super Formula.
The timing of Red Bull’s request is intriguing given that Max Verstappen is currently just one penalty point away from a race ban, which will require the Dutchman to be on his best behaviour at the upcoming Canadian and Austrian Grand Prix.
However, it's important to note that Red Bull's request for Lindblad's Superlicence predates the three penalty points accrued by Verstappen last time out in Barcelona and is not directly related to the reigning world champion’s situation.
Lindblad's impressive trajectory includes a recent victory in his first F2 feature race in Spain.
The Campos Racing driver, currently sitting third in the F2 championship, is widely expected to participate in several FP1 sessions over the coming months, potentially paving the way for a Formula 1 debut within the Red Bull family as early as 2026.
