Lindblad to make F1 debut in British GP practice, confirms Marko

Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko has revealed that 17-year-old junior driver Arvid Lindblad will make his official Formula 1 debut next week at Silverstone when he takes part in Friday’s opening practice at the British Grand Prix.

The news marks a significant milestone for the British-Swedish prodigy, who has rapidly ascended through the motorsport ranks and is now poised to showcase his talent on F1’s grand stage.

Lindblad, a standout in the Red Bull Junior Team and currently competing in the FIA F2 Championship with Campos Racing, recently secured his FIA superlicence, making him eligible for F1 sessions.

His preparation for this debut included a full test in Racing Bulls’ 2023 AT04 chassis at Imola earlier this week, where he shared duties with fellow Red Bull junior Ayumu Iwasa. Lindblad expected to drive for the Racing Bulls team during the Silverstone FP1 session.

Building a Robust Reserve Lineup

Marko emphasized Lindblad’s readiness and the strategic importance of bolstering Red Bull’s reserve driver pool, particularly given the precarious situation surrounding world champion Max Verstappen, who is one penalty point away from a race ban.

“He spent half a day in the car in Italy on Monday to prepare him,” Marko told Austrian outlet Kleine Zeitung. “And he will also be in the car for Friday practice at Silverstone. He is characterised by his mental strength and self-confidence.”

The 82-year-old Austrian highlighted the challenges of maintaining a reliable reserve driver lineup, noting that Iwasa’s commitments in Super Formula have occasionally clashed with F1 schedules.

“We are preparing ourselves in case something really happens with Max Verstappen in terms of his penalty points,” Marko explained.

“We currently have two replacement drivers: Lindblad and Ayumu Iwasa, whose Formula 1 commitments overlap with his commitments in Japan.”

Proper Reserve Drivers in Short Supply

Marko also revealed the complexity of securing reserve drivers.

“For some races we even had a deal with another team, and once a substitute driver was even scheduled for three teams,” he added.

“It is not so easy to find someone who is in good shape. And that's why Lindblad is now in the car.”

Lindblad’s debut comes at a time when Red Bull is intensifying its focus on developing young talent to complement its driver roster.

The teenager’s impressive performances in F2, including two race wins and a third-place standing in the championship, have drawn comparisons to past Red Bull stars like Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel.

His Silverstone outing will not only fulfill F1’s mandatory rookie FP1 requirements but also serve as a critical evaluation of his potential for a future full-time seat, possibly with Racing Bulls in 2026.
