Wolff: Russell-Antonelli are Mercedes’ ‘absolute priority’ for 2026

In a definitive statement, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has reaffirmed his commitment to retaining drivers George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli for the 2026 season, dismissing speculation about a potential move for reigning champion Max Verstappen.

Despite recent talks with the Red Bull driver’s camp, Wolff emphasized that continuing with the current driver lineup remains the team’s “absolute priority” as it prepares for the new regulatory era in 2026.

Speaking to Austrian broadcaster ORF, Wolff said talks with both of Mercedes’ drivers are ongoing and productive. Russell’s deal is due to expire at the end of 2025, while Antonelli has not yet been officially confirmed for 2026.

“Discussions have been taking place over the last weeks and months, so they are all up to date,” Wolff said.

“The direction of travel is definitely that we want to continue with George and Kimi. That is the absolute priority.”

Wolff did acknowledge that a talent like Verstappen can’t be ignored entirely, especially with the 2026 regulations introducing a seismic shift in power unit technology. But he firmly rejected any suggestion of a surprise deal happening over the summer.

“But you can't look past someone like Max and the plans he has for the future. We did that, but I don't think there will be any big surprises.”

Sardinia, Speculation, and Social Media Fictions

In recent weeks, Verstappen and Wolff both vacationed on the Italian island of Sardinia, prompting wild speculation that secret contract talks were underway. Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher added fuel to the fire by claiming the pair had met – and doctored images even circulated on the internet of Wolff supposedly boarding Verstappen’s private jet.

The Mercedes chief, clearly amused by the social media frenzy, dismissed the rumors with a smile.

“What’s new is that people are doing photo collages with airplanes. We’ve never had that before,” he said, with a shrug.

“But if you spend your holidays close to each other, it doesn’t mean that you’re going to work together in Formula 1. We have always gotten along well and by chance we like to spend our holidays at the same places.”

Still Room for Long-Term Intrigue?

While Wolff’s comments seem to shut the door on a Verstappen-to-Mercedes switch for 2026, they don’t necessarily rule out a move further down the line. That leaves a lingering question around how long a renewal for Russell might last – particularly as the Briton is believed to be seeking a long-term commitment.

For now, though, Mercedes’ message is one of stability over shock, as it prepares for the next chapter in Formula 1’s evolution with a firm hand on its driver future.

In other words: don’t expect fireworks over the summer – but in F1, even the calmest waters can hide the deepest currents.
