Piastri helpless against Verstappen straight-line speed in Spa sprint

Championship leader Oscar Piastri walked away from Saturday’s Belgian Grand Prix Sprint with a solid second-place finish and a slightly bigger points cushion – but couldn’t hide a tinge of frustration after spending 15 laps locked behind a Red Bull he simply couldn’t pass.

Starting from pole, Piastri made a clean launch and initially tried to break the slipstream advantage down the long Kemmel Straight.

But Max Verstappen, armed with a low-downforce Red Bull setup, made the expected move into Les Combes on Lap 1 and never looked back.

Despite staying within one second of the Dutchman throughout the 15-lap dash, the Australian never had a real opportunity to strike.

“Pretty much, yeah. I tried my best to just snake my way through the straights and not give too much of a tow,” Piastri said when asked if he’d anticipated losing the lead at the start.

“But no, I just didn't have enough straight line speed. And then obviously, yeah, didn't have enough straight line speed for the next 15 laps either. So, still good a result, still good points."

Strategy Dilemma for Sunday

Piastri's runner-up finish means he now holds a nine-point lead over teammate Lando Norris in the drivers’ standings. But had he found a way past Verstappen, that gap could have widened even further. Still, the McLaren driver kept things in perspective.

“It is only the sprint, the main points come tomorrow, so no, pretty happy with it, but just obviously a bit frustrating I couldn't get past.”

Looking ahead to Sunday’s main event, Piastri faces a tricky setup decision. McLaren’s low-drag rear wing is crucial for straight-line speed – as Verstappen proved – but carries significant risk if the weather turns wet, which forecasts suggest is likely.

“It's a great question. The weather is looking pretty, pretty bad for tomorrow, which obviously means you probably don't want to take off too much wing,” he said.

“But I don't really want to repeat the sprint we've just had. So yeah, we'll have a look and see what we can do. But yeah, there's a lot of things to look into before tomorrow.”

Norris: “Red Bull was too quick"

Lando Norris completed the Sprint podium in third after a brief early scrap with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Though unable to challenge either Verstappen or Piastri, the Briton was satisfied with the points, if not the spectacle.

“Yeah, not a lot going on, a bit of fun at the start with fighting with Charles. Perhaps I could have positioned myself better,” Norris said.

“Otherwise, a bit too difficult to get past Max, he drove a good race, and I wouldn't get past anyone if Oscar didn't get past Max.

“They both did good races. It's tough, I hope for a bit of battling or something but the Red Bull was too quick in the straight. Maybe some tweaks for us to make in qualifying, I don't know.”

With Spa’s unpredictable skies looming large over Sunday, the stage is set for another strategic showdown – and Piastri will be eager to turn frustration into redemption.
