Russell admits Mercedes contract talks have been ‘conflicting’

George Russell has opened up about the uncertainty surrounding his future with Mercedes, admitting that the past few months of contract negotiations have been “conflicting.”

While the 27-year-old remains without a new deal beyond the end of this season, he insists that trust in the team and a shared hunger for success continue to guide his approach.

Speaking ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Russell reflected on his increasingly complex contract situation – one that has lingered in the background these past months.

Strains Beneath the Surface

Despite keeping a calm front, the Brit revealed for the first time that the situation has not been easy.

“I don’t wish for it to come to anything like that,” he said, when asked if he might eventually need to manage his career more independently. “I still trust Toto [Wolff] and I still have trust in the team that they will always support me as long as I’m performing.”

“That’s what I need to focus on. But of course, for both Kimi and I, these past months have not been the most assuring for our future, and that’s just been a bit conflicting.”

The mention of rookie teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli – also yet to secure a contract beyond this season – underscores a wider feeling of instability inside the Silver Arrows camp.

With rumours about Max Verstappen’s potential switch to Mercedes finally put to rest after the Dutchman committed to Red Bull for 2026, a deal for Russell would go a long way toward restoring clarity at Brackley.

A Desire to Win Above All Else

Russell made it clear that any decision about his future will hinge on one key priority: winning.

“It’s something we need to think about,” he said, when pressed on how long a new contract might run. “What is in the interest of both parties, really? What do I want from this, as much as what do Mercedes want?”

“It has been, obviously, a bit of a unique situation we found ourselves in over these last six months. The fact is, from my side, I want to win.”

“That is the only thing I care about more than money, more than [the] number of days of the sponsorship, more than anything.”

“I want to win and that, for me, is the most important thing about my future.”

Reflecting on Loyalty and Alignment

Russell’s comments also revealed how the close alignment between himself and Mercedes – a relationship that has spanned his entire F1 career – has been tested during this recent period of ambiguity.

“Let’s say from my whole career until last year, the team have supported me so much and given me such amazing opportunities,” he said. “Our goals have been aligned and what has been in the best interest of the team has also been in the best interest of me.

“Now, of course, these last six months have been a very unique situation where I don’t have a huge power in that agreement.

“Maybe the interests were not aligned for some time, which has put me at risk for these last six months. But then it was my job to perform and reduce that risk.”

Russell’s candid remarks mark a significant moment in his relationship with Mercedes – still rooted in trust, but clearly strained by the slow pace of negotiations.

With his contract expiring at the end of the year, the second half of the 2025 season could prove pivotal, not only for his future but also for the stability of a Mercedes team still finding its footing in its post-Hamilton era.
