Cadillac F1 and Schumacher: A strategic fit for both parties?

Mick Schumacher is reportedly gaining traction as a potential driver for Cadillac’s inaugural Formula 1 campaign in 2026.

The 26-year-old former Haas racer has made no secret of his determination to return to F1, and sources suggest that discussions with the American manufacturer are progressing positively.

However, while a full-time race seat remains a tough prize to secure, the German charger’s ongoing talks with Cadillac signal a potential lifeline to return to the F1 paddock, possibly in a reserve and development role, according to The Race, alongside a continued presence in the World Endurance Championship.

Cadillac has kept fans and drivers on tenterhooks, delaying the announcement of its official F1 line-up. While one seat is expected to go to an experienced campaigner – likely Sergio Perez or Valtteri Bottas –the second seat remains wide open.

Several younger talents have been linked to the role, including Zhou Guanyu, Yuki Tsunoda, Jack Doohan, Felipe Drugovich, Paul Aron, and American Formula 2 prospect Jak Crawford. Adding to this list is Schumacher, who boasts 43 Formula 1 starts with Haas across the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

Since leaving the US outfit, Schumacher has been competing with Alpine in the WEC, achieving three podium finishes and proving his versatility outside Formula 1.

Speaking last month at Interlagos during the Brazilian round of the WEC, Schumacher offered an update on his potential Cadillac move.

"Yes, of course, discussions are ongoing," he said. "The communication has been very positive so far. And they've already hired a fantastic number of people for it.

“It's an honour to be part of it, to negotiate with them, and a great position to be in."

A Strategic Fit for Both Parties

While hopes of securing a race seat remain alive, a reserve role with Cadillac would still allow the latter to tap into Schumacher’s F1 experience and the insights he gained at Mercedes, while keeping him close to the sport’s elite level.

At the same time, Schumacher could continue his WEC journey. Intriguingly, the German appears to be the leading candidate to replace 2009 F1 champion Jenson Button at Cadillac Team Jota in the WEC, potentially racing alongside Le Mans winner Earl Bamber and former F1 driver Sebastien Bourdais in the #38 V-Series.R.

This dual program would be a strategic fit, aligning with Cadillac’s broader motorsport ambitions and Schumacher’s desire to stay race-sharp.

Cadillac Team Jota’s recent success, including pole position at the 2025 Le Mans 24 Hours and a victory at the São Paulo 6 Hours, undeniably makes it an attractive platform for Schumacher to showcase his talent.

With discussions ongoing and Schumacher’s positive outlook, the former Formula 2 champion could soon find himself back in F1, representing a new chapter for both himself and Cadillac’s ambitious entry into the sport.
