‘Pretty straightforward’: Verstappen reflects on calm Baku triumph

Max Verstappen delivered a masterclass performance at the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday, securing a commanding victory that he described as “pretty straightforward.”

The Dutchman led from start to finish, capitalizing on a flawless weekend that included pole position, the fastest lap, and the race win, achievements that reestablished Red Bull’s competitive position among F1’s front-runners.

After the field barreled down and through Baku’s Turn 1 in orderly fashion, Verstappen wasted no time asserting his dominance as he gradually pulled away in clean air.

His decision to start on Pirelli’s hard tyre paid dividends as the threat of rain never materialized.

Despite an early Safety Car triggered by championship rival Oscar Piastri’s uncharacteristic crash on the opening lap, Verstappen remained unfazed, maintaining his lead with ease.

“This weekend has been incredible for us,” Verstappen said post-race, reflecting on his second consecutive victory.

“Of course, last weekend was already great. For us to win here again is just fantastic. “Also in the race, the car was working really well on both of the compounds.”

Verstappen’s ability to manage his tyres was key to his unchallenged run at the front.

“We had clean air all the time, and you could then look after your tyres. It was pretty straightforward,” he added.

The windy conditions in Baku, which made the car “always moving around a lot,” posed no significant challenge to the Dutchman’s skill.

“It’s not easy around here, it was very windy today, so the car is always moving around a lot. Incredibly happy with this performance,” he said.

A Surprisingly Uneventful Race

Saturday’s qualifying session had set the stage for a chaotic Sunday, with an unprecedented six red flags disrupting proceedings. However, the race proved to be a stark contrast, with minimal drama after Piastri’s early exit.

Verstappen noted the cautious approach adopted by drivers, particularly in managing tyres to execute a one-stop strategy.

“In the race, you have to be a little bit more careful,” he explained. “Also with tyre management and stuff you want to make the one-stop work.

“Everyone was a bit more cautious with that anyway. Plus, the compounds that we were running today, medium and hard, they weren’t really used that much up until today. That all helped.”

Overall, Verstappen was relieved by the lack of further disruptions over the course of the 51-lap event.

"For sure, I was happy that there were not too many Safety Cars!” he concluded.

Verstappen’s consistent form has put him in a strong position to negotiate the back half of the season. His ability to combine speed, strategy, and composure under pressure has once again proven why he remains a formidable force in Formula 1.
