Second time lucky? Albon rumored for Red Bull comeback seat

Fresh speculation has emerged over Red Bull’s 2026 driver line-up, with talk of a sensational return for Alex Albon to Milton Keynes alongside Max Verstappen.

The Anglo-Thai driver, who rebuilt his Formula 1 career with Williams after his short-lived stint at Red Bull in 2019 and 2020, is once again being linked to the sport’s most coveted – and most punishing – seat.

Red Bull is currently facing a familiar dilemma: plenty of young talent, but no obvious, risk-free choice.

Isack Hadjar is widely tipped to make the step up from Racing Bulls to Red Bull Racing, forming a youthful pairing with Verstappen that could excite the fans but carries its own uncertainties.

After five years in the Red Bull family, Yuki Tsunoda’s fate remains uncertain, while it’s also unclear whether Liam Lawson will retain his seat at Faenza, where rising star and F2 rookie Arvid Lindblad has been earmarked for a potential promotion.

A Homecoming for Albon

Into this mix comes the Albon rumor. According to Motorsport Italia, and this is to be taken with the usual pinch of salt, Red Bull has reopened discussions about bringing him back into the fold.

That move would be a remarkable twist, given how the 29-year-old’s first spell at the senior team ended abruptly in 2020 after just 18 months. Since then, Albon has thrived at Williams, becoming the team’s linchpin and delivering results that have lifted the British outfit back toward the midfield fight.

But there’s a major hurdle: Albon is under contract with Williams until the end of 2027, having signed a long-term extension last year.

Team boss James Vowles has been clear about how highly he values Albon, describing him as central to Williams’ ongoing resurgence. With Mercedes next-generation power unit on the way and steady progress in the standings, Williams has every reason to fight hard to keep him.

That hasn’t stopped Red Bull’s influential shareholder Chalerm Yoovidhya from reportedly pushing for a deal. As a fellow Thai and long-time backer of Albon, he is said to be open to exploring the kind of financial package that could pave the way for a move.

Second Time Lucky?

Of course, even if the obstacles were cleared, one question looms larger than all others: would Albon want the job?

Sharing a garage with Verstappen has proved the toughest gig in F1, with every challenger from Pierre Gasly to Sergio Pérez ultimately falling short. Albon himself has admitted he now better understands why his first spell at Red Bull didn’t work out – but proving it with a second chance would be the ultimate test.

For now, the idea remains firmly in the realm of rumor. Albon has previously hinted he has little appetite for a Red Bull return, especially as Williams continues to build momentum.

But in Formula 1, contracts can be broken, minds can change, and surprises are never far away. If nothing else, this latest twist ensures Albon’s name will stay firmly in the mix as the 2026 grid takes shape.
