Stella rallies McLaren: F1 title fight ‘a privilege’ – so enjoy it!

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has reminded his troops that battling for the Formula 1 world championship is not a burden – it’s a privilege.

The Italian engineer, who’s guided the Woking outfit through a remarkable resurgence, believes that while the title showdown with Red Bull and Max Verstappen has tightened dramatically, McLaren must keep its cool and enjoy the fight.

After all, as Stella put it, this is exactly what Formula 1 is meant to be.

Keeping Cool Under Pressure

While McLaren sealed in Singapore its second successive Constructors’ title, the team’s once comfortable advantage in the Drivers’ championship has substantially dwindled.

Since F1’s summer break, Verstappen has slashed Oscar Piastri’s lead from over 100 points to just 40, reigniting a title race few expected to stay alive this long.

But while the pressure has clearly intensified, Stella doesn’t want his team – or himself – to lose sight of how far they’ve come.

“Well, first of all, I need to keep myself calm, which, thanks to the experience, as you say, and also by putting things in good perspective,” he told reporters in Austin, quoted by Motorsport Week.

“I hope that I will be able to do so. And we keep talking about the fact that what we are facing in this moment, which is a tight competition to win races, a tight competition in the quest for the Drivers’ Championship, is what Formula 1 is about.

“If anything, it was anomalous when we were doing easily P1, P2, like in Barcelona, in Bahrain, in some other places. That’s not what Formula 1 is about.”

Maximum Intensity, Minimum Stress

For Stella, the current phase of the season isn’t something to fear – it’s something to savour. The tension, the unpredictability, and the sheer thrill of competing at the sport’s highest level are, in his view, the true rewards of success.

“So, it’s a process of getting used with this kind of pressure, which we want to live with maximum intensity and minimum stress,” he said.

“We don’t want to lose the joy of doing what we do.”

The McLaren team boss, who was involved in several title showdowns during his tenure with Ferrari, knows exactly how championship battles can consume a team.

But he insists perspective is everything – particularly when team papaya’s climb back to the front has been years in the making.

A Big Privilege

With both Piastri and Lando Norris in tight contention and five races left to run, McLaren faces not only Verstappen’s charge but also the challenge of managing its own intra-team rivalry.

Stella’s message, though, is simple: appreciate the journey, stay united, and let the results follow.

“We just want to make sure that we put ourselves in the state in which we perform at our best, which also includes having fun and recognising that ultimately it’s quite a big privilege to be in this situation,” he said.

“And it’s a privilege that came thanks to the good work that McLaren, the team, the two drivers have been able to do. So what we do in the future is very easy.

“We keep doing the good work and the results will take care of themselves.”

If McLaren can take Stella’s advice to heart – staying calm under pressure while remembering to enjoy the ride – the team might just find that the best way to handle the heat of a title fight is to treat it as the honour it truly is.
