Hulkenberg donates Mexico City GP helmet to charity auction

Nico Hulkenberg is turning a tough 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix into a chance to make a real-world impact, donating his race-worn helmet to an F1 Authentics charity auction in support of the Hahnair Foundation.

The initiative aims to raise funds for women and children living in poverty around the globe, marking a unique fusion of Formula 1 history and humanitarian effort.

Hulkenberg's Mexican weekend started with promise but ended in mechanical heartbreak. Plagued by power issues from the formation lap, the 38-year-old German was forced to park his Sauber on lap 25 of 71, dashing hopes of a strong points haul.

“It’s obviously a very tough one to take today," he explained post-race. "We had power issues right from the formation lap, which basically ended our race before it even began.

“It’s frustrating for everyone in the team because we know the pace was there to fight for something decent."

For a driver who's clawed his way through F1's toughest battles, the setback was just fuel for the fire –and now, a chance to give back.

“I am delighted to be working with the Hahnair Foundation on this project,” commented the Sauber charger last weekend. “The foundation has been committed to improving the development of health facilities and social institutions all around the world.

“This is a great and important initiative, which I am happy to support by donating my race worn helmet on Sunday after the race to Nico Gormsen and his team.”

Sunstone Splendor Meets Social Good

The helmet, which Hulkenberg wore during the Mexico City Grand Prix, features a special design that incorporates the Piedra del Sol, the Aztec Stone of the Sun, using gold leaf.

It symbolizes both the race’s cultural heritage and Hulkenberg’s commitment to giving back. The auction will go live on 18 November 2025 via F1 Authentics, with bids starting at £5,000.

“This is an exciting moment for the Hahnair Foundation,” co-founder Nico Gormsen said. “We are proud to see this collaboration come to fruition. Nico Hulkenberg is providing a powerful asset, and we are ready to maximize its impact

“This tangible piece of F1 history will immediately translate into concrete support, funding essential health facilities, building nurseries and establishing social institutions for those most in need.

“We are grateful to Nico for recognizing the crucial work the Hahnair Foundation does, and we look forward to achieving this goal together,” he added.

Memento Exclusives founder Barry Gough echoed the excitement surrounding the auction.

“We are pleased to be working with Nico Hulkenberg on the auction of this one-off helmet for charity. Hulkenberg has had a season to remember and continues to be a favourite amongst F1 fans too,” he said.

“With this in mind, we expect this helmet to drive a lot of interest and hope that our auction will be able to raise significant funds to go towards the great work of the Hahnair Foundation.”

By putting his helmet up for auction, Hulkenberg is ensuring that a symbol of his F1 journey in 2025 also becomes a symbol of hope for those in need – proving that even a challenging race weekend can produce a lasting legacy beyond the racetrack.
