Piastri title bid takes another hit after Vegas qualifying downer

Oscar Piastri acknowledged that a subdued P5 in qualifying in Las Vegas has dealt another blow to his suddenly uphill title campaign. But even in the neon glow of a setback, the McLaren driver sounded far from defeated ahead of Saturday’s Grand Prix.

Friday night’s session had all the volatility the Strip can muster: standing water, shifting grip, and a late yellow flag that stopped Piastri’s final flyer in its tracks.

That single moment – brough about by Charles Leclerc’s off at Turn 12 – left the Australian unable to improve and stranded on the third row, while title rival and teammate Lando Norris charged to yet another pole.

With only three rounds remaining and a 24-point deficit to Norris, Piastri admitted the obvious.

“Yes, yes it does. But it's Las Vegas after all, so a lot could happen,” he said when asked whether P5 complicates his championship push.

“We've seen pretty entertaining races here the last couple of years, a lot of action, so hopefully I can get myself involved on the right side of that action and make up some ground tomorrow.”

The chaos didn’t stop there. The wet opening segments of qualifying produced shock exits for Lewis Hamilton and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, while Alex Albon brushed the wall at Turn 16. Piastri, too, found himself moments from calamity when Isack Hadjar lost control under the yellow flag.

Chaos on a Skating Rink

Conditions were as extreme as they looked. Piastri, usually unflappable, described them in stark terms.

“Wheel spinning in fifth or even sixth gear is not something I'm very used to, so it's very tricky out there and especially off the line, that was the difficulty with the inters,” he explained.

“As soon as you put one tread block into the water it was literally like being on ice and that's when me and Isack, I had to avoid Isack at the end, we weren't even going fast but he just hit the water and spun basically.”

“So, very, very low grip. The last corner as well, that's a proper corner with no margin of error, so very tricky. Obviously there's not much they can do about it being a street circuit, but I would say the most challenging conditions I've had.”

Despite all that, the nine-time Grand Prix winner emerged from the cockpit encouraged by the car’s speed – backed up by team principal Andrea Stella, who believed Piastri had top-three potential before the yellow flag intervened.

Eyes Still on the Podium

With Saturday’s race expected to be dry, Piastri remains bullish about moving forward.

“I think, yes,” he said when asked if a podium is still within reach.

“It's difficult to know exactly where anyone sits because of the lack of proper race running this weekend, but I think the car's been pretty quick in all conditions.”

“It's quick in the rain then, it's quick in the dry yesterday. Yesterday the same thing, didn't get many opportunities to use it, so I think we've got good pace and hopefully we can use that to go forwards tomorrow.”

The road to the title may have narrowed in Las Vegas, but Piastri is clearly not ready to fold. In a weekend defined by unpredictability, he’ll need every bit of the resilience – and sharp racecraft – that has marked his standout season.
