‘No Longer Acceptable’: Schumacher takes aim once again at Stroll

Sky Germany pundit Ralf Schumacher has never been shy about taking a verbal swing at Lance Stroll. In fact, at this point, his critiques have become as frequent as a Ferrari strategy debate on Sunday afternoon.

And once again, the former Grand Prix driver has delivered another sharp assessment of the Canadian driver’s place – or, in his view, lack of place – on the Formula 1 grid.

During the latest Sky Sports Germany podcast, Schumacher dusted off one of his favorite refrains, insisting that Stroll "shouldn't really be in Formula 1 anymore."

Stroll’s seat – purchased along with the team when father Lawrence led a consortium to buy then-Force India in 2018 – has long been a lightning rod for criticism. And Schumacher once again leaned into the storm.

With the outfit - rebranded Aston Martin in 2021 - transforming itself into a tech-forward powerhouse, staffed with heavy hitters like Fernando Alonso and soon-to-be team principal Adrian Newey, Schumacher argued that the driver lineup should evolve as well.

In his view, the seat currently occupied by Stroll should be handed to new blood – specifically the 2025 Formula 2 champion, Leonardo Fornaroli.

"Strictly speaking, that's no longer acceptable. Honestly, when I see how well the Formula 2 winner [Fornaroli] has done, he deserves to be in a car like that a thousand times more," Schumacher said.

The Stroll Family’s Dilemma

Stroll’s on-track record offers plenty of ammunition for critics. While Alonso has hunted podiums and fought deep in the points, Stroll’s results have lagged noticeably behind over the course of the last three seasons.

The stats aren’t flattering: 206 points to 74 in 2023, 70 to 24 in 2024, and a further spread in 2025, where Alonso finished 10th and Stroll wound up 16th.

But Schumacher went a step further by suggesting even Lawrence Stroll, the team’s owner and Lance’s father, can no longer ignore the gap.

"But I'm also curious to see what happens there, because, to be honest, even Lawrence Stroll [...] can't turn a blind eye to this issue. In my opinion, he's also a candidate who shouldn't really be in Formula 1 anymore. Definitely."

Blunt? Absolutely. Surprising? Not at all. Ralf Schumacher critiquing Lance Stroll is, at this point, one of motorsport’s most dependable traditions.

Aston Martin’s Ambitious Future – With or Without Stroll?

Aston Martin’s transformation has been rapid and ambitious. A new £200M-plus factory, a multi-year recruitment drive, the arrival of Adrian Newey as managing technical partner in 2025 ahead of becoming team principal in 2026 – and, of course, Honda power units joining the project from next year.

With so much momentum, Schumacher believes the seat should go to someone who earned it the traditional way rather than inherited it – hence his vocal support for Fornaroli.

Whether the Stroll era at Aston Martin continues beyond 2026 or the team opts for a bold reset remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: if Lance stays, Ralf Schumacher will have something to say about it.

And if Lance goes? Well, Schumacher will probably have something to say about that too.
