Ex-Red Bull strategist Courtenay completes move to McLaren

Former Red Bull Head of Race Strategy Will Courtenay has officially completed his high-profile transition to McLaren, marking a significant talent shift as the F1 veteran takes up his new mantle as Sporting Director.

After more than two decades helping build a dynasty at Milton Keynes, Courtenay has finally traded his navy blue kit for papaya orange, bringing a wealth of championship-winning experience to Woking.

The move, which was first signaled in September 2024, became a waiting game of contractual chess. While McLaren was eager to integrate his expertise immediately, Red Bull held firm, insisting that Courtenay see out his obligations through 2025 to ensure operational stability.

Now, with the wait finally over, the Briton joins a McLaren squad that is currently enjoying its most dominant era in a generation.

A New Chapter in Woking

Reporting directly to McLaren racing director Randeep Singh, Courtenay arrives at a team that is no longer the underdog. For the first time since the late nineties, the team enters the season as the reigning Drivers’ and Constructors’ Champions.

Courtenay’s arrival is timed perfectly to help McLaren navigate the upcoming 2026 regulation overhaul and maintain their position at the summit of the sport.

Reflecting on the monumental shift in his career, Courtenay took a moment to acknowledge the journey that brought him here.

“After 22 years at Red Bull Racing, the last 15 as Head of Race Strategy there, I’m excited to say I’m now embarking on a new challenge, joining the McLaren Racing Formula 1 Team as Sporting Director,” he wrote.

Leaving a team after twenty years is never easy, and Courtenay made sure to pay tribute to the colleagues who shared in his many championship victories at Milton Keynes.

“I’d like to say a huge thanks to everyone I worked with at Red Bull,” he added. “I made so many great friends there and I hope I’ll still see many of you in the paddock. It was an incredible two and a bit decades.”

As Red Bull prepares to fill the void – likely by elevating Principal Strategy Engineer Hannah Schmitz – Courtenay is already focused on his new mission at the McLaren Technology Centre.

“I’m looking forward to settling into my new role and team, and hopefully making plenty more new friends, as I do my very best to help McLaren continue its recent success in the coming years,” he said.

With Courtenay’s tactical brilliance now embedded in Woking, the rest of the grid has one more reason to be wary of the papaya cars in the seasons to come.
