Schumacher ’94: Netflix revisits legend’s epic first F1 title

Netflix is gearing up to transport viewers back to one of Formula 1’s most volatile eras with a new feature documentary retracing Michael Schumacher’s first world title.

Titled Schumacher ’94, the film will debut globally in 2026 and zoom in on the year the German driver ignited a dynasty.

Produced by LEONINE Documentaries and directed by Christin Freitag, the feature revisits the 1994 campaign – a year that remains etched in the memory of every racing fan.

At just 25, Schumacher ignited his legendary career by winning eight races with Benetton and snatching the title by a razor-thin single point from Williams rival Damon Hill.

However, the film won’t shy away from the shadows of that epic season. It promises an unflinching look at the tragedy of Ayrton Senna’s passing at Imola and the fierce controversy of the Adelaide finale, where a clash with Hill famously decided the crown.

According to the official synopsis, 1994 was the "turning point" that set the stage for Schumacher's "unprecedented career."

The Man Behind the Visor

While the on-track action is legendary, the heart of the documentary lies in its personal reflections.

Viewers will hear from Schumacher’s wife, Corinna, and those in his inner circle, offering a rare glimpse of the man behind the helmet.

They remember him not just as the "uncompromising fighter" who dominated the circuit, but as a "sensitive, empathic man" away from the cameras.

Although the documentary will likely be available to viewers in English, Katja Hofem, Netflix VP of Content (DACH), noted that the project is a crown jewel in their "most ambitious year yet" for German-language storytelling.

Schumacher ’94 stands as a poignant tribute to a legend who continues to inspire, even while remaining shielded from the public eye.
