The dream of a Formula 1 seat is supposed to be a triumph for any young driver, but for Jack Doohan, his six-race stint with Alpine in 2025 descended into a waking nightmare.
The 23-year-old Australian arrived on the gird brimming with promise, tasked with proving himself alongside the team’s established race winner Pierre Gasly.
But whispers began early in the season that Alpine was considering a change, with Argentine prospect Franco Colapinto heavily linked to his seat.
What followed was a storm Doohan never anticipated.
As speculation intensified ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, the pressure escalated beyond the racetrack. The hostility, he revealed, became deeply personal.
"I got serious death threats for this [Miami] Grand Prix, saying they’re going to kill me here, if I’m not out of the car," he explained in an upcoming episode of Drive to Survive that will premiere on Netflix on February 27.
"I had six or seven emails saying if I am still in the car by Miami, all my limbs will be cut off."
The threats were not distant noise on social media. They felt immediate. Real. Close.
"Wednesday, I was there with my f***ing girlfriend and my trainer, and I’ve got three armed men around me - I had to call my police escort to come and get it under control."
In a sport defined by razor-thin margins and split-second bravery, this was a different kind of danger altogether. The paddock thrives on rivalry – but this crossed a line into something far more sinister.
Shortly after the Miami weekend, Alpine moved Doohan into a reserve role, effectively ending his brief tenure as a full-time F1 driver. The dream opportunity he had worked toward his entire life had unraveled under extraordinary pressure.
Now, the Australian is attempting to turn the page. In early February 2026, it was confirmed that Doohan would join Haas F1 Team as a reserve driver.
"I’m thrilled to be joining TGR Haas F1 Team," Doohan said at the time. "It’s the ideal place to continue my Formula 1 career.
"I would like to thank the team for giving me the opportunity to grow and take on the great challenge of 2026 together. I’m eager to begin working with the team and collaborating on a successful season."
For Doohan, the next chapter begins not under the blinding spotlight of a race seat, but in the shadows – rebuilding, recalibrating, and proving that the fear he endured will not define him.
Formula 1 is no stranger to drama. But for one young driver in Miami, the stakes went far beyond the checkered flag.
