Australian GP: Dominant Russell on pole as Verstappen crashes

George Russell delivered a masterclass in Melbourne, securing a dominant pole position for the 2026 Australian Grand Prix, Formula 1’s opening round of the sport’s new era.

On a day where Mercedes appeared to be – as expected – in a league of their own, Russell topped every segment of qualifying, leaving the rest of the field scrambling for answers.

The session was turned on its head almost immediately during Q1 when Max Verstappen’s afternoon hit a literal wall when the four-time world champion crashed at high speed on his very first flying lap.

Braking for Turn 1, the Red Bull’s rear wheels appeared to lock, sending the Dutchman into a spin that triggered a red flag with less than eight minutes remaining.

At the time of the stoppage, several drivers – including Kimi Antonelli and Carlos Sainz – had yet to post a time. While Antonelli recovered easily, the Williams driver was to watch the remainder of the session from his team’s garage.

Amid "dire engine hardship," Fernando Alonso was also eliminated in a late-session shuffle, ousted by a last-ditch improvement from Franco Colapinto. Lance Stroll did not take part in the session, his car stranded with another power unit issue in the Aston garage.

Mercedes Assert Dominance in Q2

As the track gripped up, Russell became the first driver to break the 1m18s barrier, clocking a 1m18.934s to lead local hero Oscar Piastri by over six-tenths.

The middle segment was equally unkind to big names; Lewis Hamilton narrowly avoided a shock exit after backing out of an initial hot lap, eventually jumping to seventh.

Meanwhile, Gabriel Bortoleto managed to squeeze his Audi into the top ten, but a technical failure at the pit entry ended his day prematurely. Consequently, only nine cars would participate in the final shootout.

Debris and a Silver Front-Row Lockout

The start of Q3 was bizarrely halted by another red flag. In a major lapse of garage protocol, cooling fans were left on Antonelli’s Mercedes; one flew off at Turn 1 and another toward Turn 3, where Lando Norris’ McLaren struck the device.

Antonelli now faces a post-session investigation for an unsafe release.

Once the track was cleared, the battle for pole became an internal Mercedes affair. Russell’s initial banker lap of 1m19.084s was already half a second clear of the pack.

Antonelli, recovering from a trip through the Turn 3 gravel, surged to a 1m18.811s on his final attempt to briefly threaten for the top spot.

However, Russell was not to be denied. The Briton found another gear on his final run, screaming across the line in 1m18.518s to take pole by three-tenths over his teammate.

The Best of the Rest

The gap behind the Silver Arrows was staggering. Isack Hadjar claimed third for Red Bull, but his 1m19.903s was nearly eight-tenths adrift of the lead.

He narrowly edged out Charles Leclerc and Piastri, who completed the top five. Norris and Hamilton followed, both nearly a second off the pace.

Further down, the Racing Bulls duo engaged in a private duel for eighth, with Liam Lawson besting rookie Arvid Lindblad after the youngster lost significant time in the second sector.

With Verstappen starting from the back and Mercedes boasting an insurmountable pace advantage, George Russell heads into Sunday as the overwhelming favorite for victory.
