Chinese GP: Antonelli becomes youngest ever pole-sitter in F1!

Teen sensation Kimi Antonelli delivered a breakthrough moment in qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix, becoming the youngest pole-sitter in Formula 1 history after a dramatic Q3 session in Shanghai.

The Mercedes rookie seized the opportunity when team-mate and championship leader George Russell ran into trouble during the decisive phase of qualifying, allowing Antonelli to secure the top spot with a composed late effort.

Russell entered the final shootout chasing consecutive poles, but his bid unravelled early in Q3 when a powertrain issue left his car crawling to a halt on track. Although the Briton managed to restart the car, he was unable to shift gears properly and had to limp back to the pits.

That setback temporarily removed one of the favourites from the fight for pole and shifted the spotlight onto Antonelli.

The Italian set the initial benchmark in Q3 with a 1m32.322s before going even faster on his second run, lowering the target to 1m32.064s. The lap immediately placed pressure on the rest of the field to respond.

For a moment it appeared that Lewis Hamilton might be the closest challenger. The Ferrari driver slotted into provisional second but still trailed Antonelli by more than three tenths.

Meanwhile, Mercedes scrambled to reinitialize Russell’s power unit and send the Briton back out for one final attempt. Antonelli could only watch from the garage as his teammate began his last-ditch lap.

But when Russell crossed the line, he fell 0.222 seconds short – confirming a front-row lockout for Mercedes and sealing Antonelli’s landmark pole.

Ferrari Strong, McLaren Close Behind

Behind the silver arrows, Ferrari secured the second row with Hamilton edging team-mate Charles Leclerc.

McLaren followed closely, though neither of its drivers quite had the pace to challenge the top four. Oscar Piastri claimed fifth, narrowly beating team-mate Lando Norris by just 0.06 seconds.

Further back, Pierre Gasly broke up the expected order by qualifying ahead of both Red Bulls. It was a difficult session for the reigning champions, with Max Verstappen managing only eighth place, almost a full second away from pole.

Isack Hadjar followed in ninth, while Oliver Bearman completed the top ten for Haas.

Tight Margins and Late Drama

Qualifying’s midfield battle proved incredibly close. Nico Hulkenberg narrowly missed Q2 by just 0.002 seconds, with Franco Colapinto a further 0.003 seconds behind.

Late yellow flags in Q2 also disrupted several drivers’ final laps. Esteban Ocon, Liam Lawson and rookie Arvid Lindblad were among those caught out after a spin for Gabriel Bortoleto at the final corner brought out the caution.

At the back, Fernando Alonso could only manage 19th, while Valtteri Bottas edged Lance Stroll. Reliability struggles left Sergio Perez at the bottom of the order.

But the spotlight belonged firmly to Antonelli – the teenager who turned opportunity into history under the Shanghai lights.
