Red Bull rocked: Lambiase set to move to McLaren!

Gianpiero Lambiase – Max Verstappen’s longstanding race engineer at Red Bull – is once again at the center of a sensational development, with reports from the Netherlands claiming the Briton is set to join McLaren as head of race engineering from 2028.

The bombshell, first reported by De Limburger’s F1 correspondent Jacky Martens, suggests Lambiase has accepted an “astronomical offer” to leave Red Bull Racing, where he has long been a pivotal figure as Verstappen’s strategist and voice on the radio.

For nearly a decade, the Lambiase-Verstappen alliance has been a defining force in Formula 1 – a blend of bonding complicity, trust, and occasional friction that delivered multiple world championships and helped cement Red Bull’s dominance.

While Lambiase was the subject of intense interest from both Aston Martin and Williams last year, it appears that it is the Woking-based squad that has successfully pulled off the ultimate recruitment heist.

A new era at Team Papaya?

This wouldn’t be just a simple lateral move for Red Bull’s current Head of Racing. According to De Telegraaf, the deal carries implications that reach the very top of the McLaren hierarchy.

While Lambiase would arrive as a titan of engineering, there is also chatter that he could eventually succeed Andrea Stella as team principal.

Such a transition would signal a major – and surprising – changing of the guard at team papaya. Rumors are already swirling that Stella may be eyeing a sentimental return to Ferrari, the team where his career began over two decades ago.

Should such a move come to pass, Lambiase stands ready to trade his headset for a seat at the head of the pit wall, following the path of other former Red Bull stalwarts like Rob Marshall and Will Courtenay to the McLaren garage.

A crumbling Red Bull dynasty

The departure of Lambiase would be more than a technical loss for Red Bull; it would be a personal blow to Max Verstappen.

The bond between the Dutchman and Lambiase is legendary – a partnership forged in 2016 that has yielded four consecutive world titles.

For a driver who values loyalty and consistency above all else, the exit of his "partner-in-crime" would be a catastrophic development.

It would also cast another long shadow over Max Verstappen’s own future. Although the 28-year-old is theoretically tied to Milton Keynes until the end of 2028, the exodus of the team's brain trust – including the likes of Adrian Newey and Jonathan Wheatley, and also former team boss Christian Horner – has left the champion in an increasingly isolated position.

With Verstappen already voicing his frustrations regarding the sport's 2026 regulatory changes, the loss of his most trusted ally might be the final catalyst that sees him walk away from the grid entirely when his contract expires, or perhaps even before.
