For a driver once known for his cool, almost understated presence, Oscar Piastri is starting to show a different side – and it’s paying off both on and off the track.
The McLaren charger, already a multiple race winner just a few seasons into his Formula 1 career, is embracing the spotlight with a growing sense of ease… and a touch more personality.
From a composed rookie in 2023 to a confident front-runner today, Piastri’s rise has been as smooth as it has been swift. Wins, podiums, and a reputation as one of the grid’s most unflappable talents have followed – but under the helmet, something else has been evolving too.
The Australian is loosening up, cracking jokes, and, by his own admission, feeling far more at home in the high-pressure world of F1.
And while results have certainly helped, Piastri believes the real breakthrough has come from something much simpler: just being himself.
Reflecting on his journey so far, Piastri admits that the early days in Formula 1 came with a natural adjustment period, especially when it came to life in the public eye.
“I certainly feel more comfortable now than I did in my first year of F1,” the McLaren driver told Fox Sports.
“I think it’s always been something that’s pretty important to me, being just who I am off the track as well and not trying to force something that isn’t me.”
That authenticity, he suggests, has unlocked a new level of performance. No longer trying to fit a mould, Piastri has found a rhythm that works both in and out of the cockpit.
With success has come confidence – and with confidence, a willingness to show a more playful side. Piastri says humour and honesty have their place in Formula 1, but only if they’re backed up by results.
“It’s always attached to performances on the track,” he said.
“I think often I find it very hard anyway to be kind of jokey or making shots at people and stuff if you can’t back it up on track, and for me just being relaxed and being myself has always been how I am.
“I think as you become more comfortable, you kind of make jokes about not doing the first two races of the year or stuff like that.
“That’s just always how I’ve been in some ways, but once you’ve got some results and let’s say some street cred to back it up, then you naturally feel a bit more comfortable, showing yourself more and not being maybe the super professional F1 driver all the time and letting your personality show.
“That’s just how I am as a person, and I think everyone’s unique in their own way.”
It’s a mindset that seems to be working. Even after a shaky start to the season, including two painful non-starts, Piastri bounced back with a strong podium at Suzuka, underlining both his resilience and growing maturity.
As McLaren continues to find its footing, one thing is clear: a more relaxed, more expressive Piastri is not just easier to relate to – it might just make him even harder to beat.
