Max Verstappen led the tributes on a dark day for motorsport after Finnish driver Juha Miettinen lost his life during Saturday’s qualifying race for next month’s Nürburgring 24 Hours at the fearsome Nürburgring’s Nordschleife.
The tragic crash occurred early in the four-hour event, just before the daunting Caracciola-Karussell.
A seven-car collision brought the race to an immediate standstill, with red flags deployed – an uncommon sight on the Nordschleife.
Emergency crews responded swiftly, but despite their efforts, 66-year-old Miettinen succumbed to his injuries at the circuit’s medical centre. Six other drivers involved were treated either on-site or at a nearby hospital, with none suffering life-threatening injuries.
The race was ultimately abandoned, leaving a stunned paddock in silence.
Verstappen, who had been due to take part in the event at the wheel of his team’s Mercedes-AMG GT3 never got the chance to climb into the cockpit – his focus instead shifting to the devastating news unfolding around him.
In the aftermath, Verstappen shared a heartfelt message that captured both the shock of the moment and the inherent risks of racing.
“Shocked by what happened today… Motorsport is something we all love, but in times like this it is a reminder of how dangerous it can be,” the four-time F1 world champion wrote on social media.
“Sending my heartfelt condolences to Juha’s family and loved ones.”

Saturday’s tragedy has once again underlined the fine margins within motorsport. Even with modern safety advancements, circuits like the Nordschleife remain among the most challenging and unpredictable in the world.
As the event prepares to continue, a minute’s silence will be observed before Sunday’s running – an opportunity for the paddock to reflect and pay tribute.
For Verstappen and the wider racing community, the message is a sobering one: the passion for racing endures, but so too does the ever-present danger that defines it.
