Mystery damage ruins Verstappen’s charge in Nürburgring NLS5

The challenge of the fearsome Nordschleife turned against Max Verstappen on Sunday, as what began as a commanding charge in the day’s qualifying race for next month’s Nürburgring 24 Hours unraveled into frustration deep inside the legendary venue.

The NLS5 event carried a heavy atmosphere following the tragic abandonment of Saturday's NLS4 race, which claimed the life of amateur racer Juha Miettinen.

After a poignant minute’s silence on the grid, the field roared to life. Verstappen’s teammate, Lucas Auer, had put the Mercedes-AMG GT3 fifth on the grid, but it was the Dutchman who climbed into the cockpit for the opening charge.

Within the opening hour, the Red Bull charger carved through the field, moving from fourth into a commanding lead. By the time he began his second stint, he had checked out, establishing a massive 30-second gap over the chasing pack.

However, just 38 minutes into that second stint, the Team Verstappen No. 3 car was seen limping toward the pits. Verstappen reported unsettling vibrations through the steering wheel, a symptom of potential mystery damage to the car's front splitter.

The Winward crew was forced to wheel the silver-and-blue machine into the garage for nearly thirty minutes of surgery, effectively ending any hopes of a podium finish.

While the No. 16 Rowe Racing BMW of Max Hesse, Jordan Pepper, and Kelvin van der Linde cruised to the win, Team Verstappen was left playing catch-up.

After extensive repairs, Auer returned to the track for the final two hours, but the damage was done. The duo could only salvage 21st in the top GT3 class and 39th overall.

The day marked a frustrating run of luck for Verstappen at the Nordschleife this season.

After losing an NLS2 victory last month due to a tyre usage technicality, Sunday’s issues ensure the world champion’s wait for a clean win at the Ring continues ahead of next month’s 24 Hours event.
