Verstappen’s next move? Coulthard drops shock F1 ‘perfect fit’

Max Verstappen’s Formula 1 future has become the sport’s juiciest paddock intrigue – and David Coulthard has just thrown a potential wicked curve ball into the mix.

With Red Bull stumbling somewhat into F1’s new regulation era and Verstappen visibly irritated by the championship’s changing DNA, whispers about a blockbuster exit are no longer confined to late-night gossip in the motorhome hospitality suites.

Mercedes has long been cast as the obvious destination. But Coulthard? He sees something far more dramatic.

Coulthard’s Maranello theory

According to Coulthard, if Max ever decides to hang up his Milton Keynes overalls, he shouldn't be looking toward Brackley, but rather toward the emotional heart of Maranello.

Speaking on the Up to Speed podcast, DC suggested that Ferrari offers a vibe that matches Verstappen's "no-nonsense" racing DNA far better than the rigid structure of the German manufacturer.

“I think that Max actually, as a shoo-in, fits better to the Ferrari world than the Mercedes world,” Coulthard noted, dismissing the idea that Max’s current side-hustles dictate his future.

“I know that they have this good relationship and I know that he’s racing a Mercedes in the GT3 events that he does. But the freedom to be Max, I think would be a more comfortable fit at Ferrari because you would just turn up, drive quickly, presumably win the races and then head home.”

Trouble at Red Bull and the McLaren ‘wildcard’

The current discontent in the Verstappen camp isn't just about a slow car. The four-time world champion has been vocal about his distaste for the sport’s heavy shift toward electrification, although a wise change of direction appears on the cards for 2027.

Add to that the stinging departure of his right-hand man and race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, who is headed to McLaren, and you have a recipe for the ultimate tipping point.

This has sparked even wilder theories: could Max follow Lambiase to team papaya in 2028? McLaren CEO Zak Brown, however, isn’t exactly rolling out the orange carpet just yet.

“I couldn’t be happier with our driver line-up,” Brown told Sky Sports F1 in Miami.

“Lando [Norris] and Oscar [Piastri] are not only two awesome guys, on the track, off the track, but as team mates, which is so much I think what’s made McLaren successful here – [it's] the chemistry that we have in the garage, at the factory, with our pit wall, all throughout the racing team.

“I couldn’t be happier with what we have, and zero intention in changing.”

While Brown acknowledged that Verstappen is an "awesome racing driver" and admitted a vacancy would trigger a "different conversation," he seems content to watch the drama from the top of the standings.

For now, the eyes of the world remain on Max – a driver who seems increasingly like a man looking for an exit ramp, whether it leads to the red of Italy or the quiet of retirement.
