Williams lands key McLaren figure in fresh leadership shake-up

Williams has fired another clear signal to the Formula 1 paddock: the rebuilding project at Grove is accelerating – and the team is no longer shy about recruiting heavyweight talent from its direct rivals.

In a major leadership move, Williams has secured former McLaren chief operating officer Piers Thynne for a newly created senior position aimed at sharpening the team’s long-term championship ambitions.

Thynne, who departed McLaren earlier this year after helping oversee the team’s resurgence back toward the front of the grid, will join Williams in August as chief optimisation and planning officer – a role specifically designed to strengthen operational efficiency and strategic development across the organisation.

The move is the latest sign that team principal James Vowles continues to aggressively reshape Williams behind the scenes, even as the team battles through a bruising start to the 2026 campaign.

The British outfit currently sits eighth in the constructors’ standings after scoring just five points in the opening races, with the FW48 struggling both for outright pace and weight reduction. But while results on track remain difficult, activity away from the circuit paints a very different picture.

Alongside Thynne’s arrival, Williams also confirmed the recruitment of Mercedes duo Claire Simpson and Fred Judd, as well as former Alpine chief engineer Steve Booth.

The trio will assume key technical positions, adding experience drawn from championship-winning environments. Collectively, the new recruits have contributed to 12 title-winning Formula 1 cars and bring more than six decades of combined expertise into the Grove operation.

‘A really exciting moment’

For Thynne, the move represents an opportunity to help revive another iconic British Formula 1 name.

“I am delighted to be joining Atlassian Williams F1 Team at what is a really exciting moment. Williams has clear ambition to be championship level in all areas and set new standards in the sport, and I can’t wait to play my part in that as a member of the senior leadership group,” commented Thynne.

“I have enjoyed a fantastic time at McLaren, helping bring the team back to the top, and hope we will be able to do the same at Williams.”

Vowles, meanwhile, made little attempt to hide how significant he views the appointments as Williams continues investing heavily in its long-term transformation.

“I am thrilled to be welcoming Piers to Atlassian Williams F1 Team as we continue investing in the people, processes and technology to compete at the front in Formula 1,” Williams team principal James Vowles said.

“We are clear in our ambition to build a team that can win World Championships, and Piers has unrivalled recent experience in doing exactly that.

“I am also delighted to welcome Claire, Fred and Steve - we are attracting extremely talented strategic recruits from throughout the paddock who will add to the foundations we have already put in place over the past few years and help take us to the next level.”

For Williams, the message is unmistakable: while the current season may be painful, the team’s long-term project is gathering serious momentum.
