Komatsu hints at when Haas will decide its 2027 driver line-up

The Formula 1 silly season may have only just cracked open, but inside the Haas garage the temperature is already climbing – and Ayao Komatsu sounds like a man who knows exactly how important the next few weeks could become.

With Esteban Ocon’s future hanging in the balance and whispers of internal friction refusing to disappear, the Haas team principal has now revealed when the American outfit expects to make a call on its 2027 driver line-up.

And judging by his reaction to the speculation swirling around Ocon, Komatsu is already fed up with the circus.

Haas heads into a potentially explosive driver market with both Ocon and rookie Ollie Bearman approaching the ends of their current deals. After a relatively quiet build-up to Formula 1’s new regulation era, the next contract cycle is expected to unleash total chaos across the grid.

And Haas suddenly finds itself right in the middle of it.

Ocon arrived from Alpine at the start of 2025 carrying the reputation of a proven race winner and a driver capable of dragging a midfield team forward. Instead, his season has become increasingly uncomfortable.

Bearman, the less experienced of the two drivers, has consistently had the upper hand, while rumours of a fractured relationship between Ocon and the team have spread through the paddock.

The Frenchman already lashed out at the speculation in Montreal, branding the reports “complete b*******”, while Komatsu also rubbished the gossip in fiery fashion.

Komatsu refuses to fuel the fire

Asked when Haas expects to make a decision on its 2027 line-up, Komatsu admitted the process is already underway behind the scenes.

“Around now time, like May, June, July,” he said when asked about a timeline on the decision. “I think everybody’s looking at next year’s drivers. It’s not just us, everyone.”

That alone was enough to crank up speculation around Ocon’s future. But things escalated quickly when Komatsu was pushed on what decision he would make if forced to choose immediately.

“I think a question like this is going to create some s***, right?,” Komatsu fired back. “Because then people are going to take my word and say, ‘oh, Ayao said if you decide now, you're going to continue with Esteban, not continue with Esteban’.

“They take it completely out of context, so I'm not going to answer that question.”

That was hardly the response of a team principal eager to shut down rumours cleanly and calmly.

Behind the scenes, Haas suddenly has options – and plenty of them. If the team decides Ocon’s experiment has failed to deliver, reserve driver Jack Doohan is waiting in the wings.

But former Red Bull driver Yuki Tsunoda has also emerged as a possible candidate – according to the rumor mill, particularly given Haas’ growing ties with Toyota and its increasing Japanese influence.

For now, Komatsu is refusing to show his hand publicly. But his timeline makes one thing clear: the clock is ticking, and the decision on Ocon’s future may arrive far sooner than expected.
