Antonelli hails Monaco pole as ‘one of those magic laps’

Once again, a sensational Kimi Antonelli delivered when it mattered in Saturday’s Monaco Grand Prix qualifying, the Mercedes driver producing what he described as a “magic lap” to seize pole position for Sunday’s race.

It was a breathtaking performance by the championship leader that evoked memories of some of Formula 1’s greatest laps around the streets of Monte Carlo.

Antonelli entered Saturday facing a formidable challenge. After Mercedes struggled for pace on Friday and appeared to be trailing both Ferrari and Max Verstappen, few expected the Silver Arrows to emerge with pole position.

But Antonelli had other ideas.

The 19-year-old steadily built momentum throughout qualifying and, after trailing the Ferrari drivers and Verstappen by the slimmest possible margin following the opening Q3 runs, found another level when everything was on the line.

His final effort – a stunning 1m12.051s – was enough to deny the Red Bull charger by just 0.043s and secure what could prove to be one of the defining pole positions of his young career.

And Antonelli knew immediately that he had produced something special.

"Yeah, I mean, it was one of those laps that we call a magic lap, you know?" he said. "I was able to put it all together, and it was such a close qualifying session with Max.

"In the first run of Q3, there was just one thousandth between us, but I knew the last lap was good, and I was just hoping it would be enough. But yeah, it was very close, and I'm very happy with that.

"Massive thanks to the team, because yesterday we struggled a little bit, and today we were able to improve massively."

Shades of Senna around the streets of Monte Carlo

Monaco has long been the ultimate proving ground for Formula 1 drivers, a place where commitment, precision and bravery are rewarded more than anywhere else on the calendar.

Antonelli's pole-winning effort inevitably invited comparisons with some of the circuit's most iconic qualifying performances, including Ayrton Senna's legendary pole lap in 1988 – a lap the Brazilian famously described as transcending normal limits.

Asked whether he had experienced something similar behind the wheel, Antonelli acknowledged the intensity of the moment.

“Yeah, I think this was one of the most intense, if not the most intense, qualifying sessions of the year, and it takes a massive effort. Also, practices, because you just keep trying to get close to the limit,” he said.

“When it’s about finding the last two tenths, it’s not easy because the walls start to come closer, and it’s not easy to gain the confidence.

“But I have to be honest, I felt great this morning and I’m happy that we could finish this off today.”

While Antonelli stopped short of claiming any mystical experience, his final lap certainly carried echoes of the fearless commitment that has defined Monaco's greatest qualifying performances.

Mercedes turnaround unlocks pole charge

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Antonelli’s achievement was how dramatically Mercedes transformed its fortunes overnight.

On Friday, Ferrari appeared firmly in control after locking out the top two positions in both practice sessions, while Mercedes looked destined to play a supporting role.

Instead, the team found significant performance through setup changes, allowing Antonelli to emerge as a genuine contender from the very start of Saturday running.

“The team did an incredible big turnaround compared to yesterday on the setup,” Antonelli explained.

“Yesterday, I’m not going to lie, we were struggling, so the team did a great job with overnight correlation to do big changes on setup, and the car just felt much more alive this morning.

“It was also much more forgiving to kerb-cutting, bumps…so the team did a great job and that is what made us gain so much in terms of performance between yesterday and today, and allowed us to fight for pole.”

For a driver already leading the championship, Monaco pole represents far more than another statistical achievement. Around a circuit where track position is everything, Antonelli has placed himself in prime position to extend his remarkable winning streak.
