McLaren reserve Fornaroli to take part in FP1 in Barcelona

After years of climbing the junior racing ladder and a championship-winning Formula 2 campaign that cemented his status as one of motorsport’s brightest young prospects, Leonardo Fornaroli is finally set to make his official Formula 1 debut this weekend.

McLaren has confirmed that its F1reserve driver will take part in Friday’s opening practice session at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, handing the 21-year-old his first taste of the team’s MCL40, marking a significant milestone in the young Italian’s rapidly developing career.

Fornaroli will step into reigning world champion Lando Norris’ car for the session, becoming the latest member of McLaren’s driver development programme to earn valuable Formula 1 track time.

A long-awaited opportunity

Fornaroli joined McLaren last December and has spent the months since immersing himself in the team's preparation programme.

That work has included three Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) outings, allowing him to build experience behind the wheel of Formula 1 machinery. Significantly, one of those tests took place at Barcelona, giving him valuable familiarity with the circuit ahead of this week's appearance.

Now, the Italian is preparing for the biggest moment of his career to date.

"I’m looking forward to getting to drive the MCL40 this weekend in Spain for Free Practice 1,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity to support the team with their preparations and work through the planned Friday programme.

"It’s also a very special milestone for me personally, as it will be my first official Formula 1 session. It’s something I’ve worked towards for a long time, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to take this next step with McLaren Racing."

Fornaroli's rise has been built on consistency, maturity and a calm approach under pressure, qualities that helped him capture the FIA Formula 2 title and attract McLaren's attention.

Friday's session will offer his first chance to showcase those qualities in front of the entire Formula 1 paddock.

Building towards the future

While the spotlight will inevitably be on his debut, Fornaroli arrives in Barcelona far from unprepared.

The young Italian has already logged considerable mileage through McLaren's testing programme, gaining valuable insight into the demands of Formula 1 machinery and the team's working methods.

He believes those experiences have played a crucial role in preparing him for the challenge ahead.

"The experience I’ve gained so far this year through the multiple Testing of Previous Cars events I’ve successfully completed has been so valuable for my development and overall learning of driving a Formula 1 car,” he said.

That preparation will be vital as he takes over Norris' car for a session expected to feature an intensive programme of setup work and data gathering ahead of the weekend.

Although the opportunity represents a personal landmark, Fornaroli is focused on contributing to McLaren's objectives as much as enjoying the moment.

Fornaroli's Formula 1 debut may last just a single practice session, but it marks the beginning of a new chapter in his career.
