Alex Albon is set to write another defining chapter in his Williams story this weekend in Barcelona, as the British-Thai driver moves into sole possession of a remarkable team record – surpassing Formula 1 legend Nigel Mansell for the most race starts in Williams history.
It is the latest step in a milestone-rich triple header for Albon, whose deepening legacy with the Grove-based outfit continues to grow across the 2026 season.
For a team approaching its 50th anniversary, the moment underscores both its history and its ongoing rebuild – anchored in part by Albon’s consistency and long-term commitment.
The story began last weekend in Monte Carlo, where Albon quietly moved into the record books by equalling Mansell’s tally of 95 starts in Williams colours. He backed it up with a solid points finish in P8 after starting 11th, adding further momentum to his season.
Now, Barcelona becomes the headline act. As he lines up for his 96th Grand Prix start with Williams, Albon will officially become the driver with the most race starts in the team’s storied history.
To mark the occasion, he will also wear a special-edition helmet inspired by Nigel Mansell’s iconic 1992 championship-winning design – a symbolic nod to one of Williams’ greatest ever champions.
“Two iconic Williams drivers. Two iconic helmet designs. 34 years apart.”
The celebrations will not stop in Spain. Just a few weeks later at the Hungarian Grand Prix, Albon is set to reach another rare milestone: 100 race starts for Williams.
Fewer than 30 drivers in Formula 1 history have reached a century of appearances with a single team, underlining the significance of his longevity at Grove.
Since joining in 2022, Albon has become a central figure in Williams’ resurgence efforts, scoring 121 points and repeatedly delivering standout drives, including multiple P5 finishes. His consistency and technical feedback have made him a cornerstone of the team’s development trajectory.

Reflecting on the achievement, Albon said:
“It is incredible to think that I've raced for this historic team more often than one of the true greats of the sport,” he said.
“Nigel Mansell was an inspiration to me growing up, a true fighter and a legend for both Williams and Formula 1 as a whole.
“This achievement is about far more than the number itself. Every Grand Prix start over the last five seasons represents the hard work of the entire team at Grove. Through the highs and lows, every race has contributed to the journey Williams has been on.
“To have my name alongside legendary Williams drivers such as Nigel, Damon Hill, and Ralf Schumacher is a real privilege and a source of immense pride.”
Williams team boss James Vowles also paid tribute to the significance of the moment:
“Records like this don't happen by accident - they're the result of years of hard work, trust, and belief on both sides. I am immensely proud of Alex and everything he has achieved with this team.
“He has earned his place in Williams history, and we're proud to celebrate these milestones together."
Even Mansell himself offered his congratulations, warmly acknowledging Albon’s achievement:
“I'm so pleased to see Alex reach this milestone - it's a really special achievement and one he thoroughly deserves.
“The commitment he has shown to Williams over these past five seasons says everything about him as a driver and as a person. And it's not just Alex - the whole team is moving in the right direction, and that's brilliant to see.
“I have no doubt he'll go on to make many, many more appearances in Williams colours. As for my wins record - I wouldn't rule anything out.”
As Barcelona approaches, Williams is not just marking another race weekend – it is celebrating the continuation of a legacy, with Albon now firmly etched among the team’s greats.
