Barcelona GP: Russell comfortably tops final practice

George Russell laid down a strong marker ahead of qualifying for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, topping the timesheets in Saturday’s final practice session, one that was interrupted by a red flag and ended in frustration for Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli.

As is often the case in FP3, teams were in no rush to hit the track in the opening stages, with only Cadillac and Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg venturing out early in the sweltering 32-degree conditions.

The action finally gathered momentum after the first 20 minutes. Lando Norris initially set the benchmark on soft tyres with a 1m16.609s lap, while Charles Leclerc quickly closed to within a tenth of the McLaren driver.

Leclerc’s challenge faded slightly through the crucial Turn 10 hairpin, a corner that repeatedly proved decisive throughout the session. Antonelli also showed early promise but lost time after a rapid middle sector.

Mercedes soon emerged as the team to beat. Russell produced a 1m16.258s effort to head a temporary Mercedes one-two, finishing just over a tenth clear of Antonelli.

Red flag disrupts running

The session was then halted when Valtteri Bottas spun into the gravel at Turn 10. The Cadillac driver reported losing his brake pedal before beaching the car, bringing out the red flags with just over 20 minutes remaining.

Once the track reopened, teams again delayed their runs before a flurry of qualifying simulations in the closing stages.

Russell immediately found more pace, lowering the benchmark to a 1m15.679s that ultimately remained unbeaten.

Antonelli’s frustration as rivals close in

Oscar Piastri came closest to denying Russell top spot, finishing just 0.214s behind in second. Leclerc slotted into third, splitting the McLarens after edging ahead of Norris, who ended the session fourth.

Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton completed the top five ahead of Max Verstappen, while Antonelli’s hopes of improving were dashed in the final minutes.

The young Italian abandoned one lap after encountering traffic and then ran wide at Turn 10 on another attempt, leaving him visibly frustrated and stranded in seventh with an earlier time.

Isack Hadjar, Hulkenberg and Arvid Lindblad rounded out the top 10 as the field headed into qualifying with little to separate the leading contenders and Russell holding the advantage.
