Russell credits ‘back to basics’ approach for strong Barcelona pole

George Russell left the Circuit de Catalunya on Saturday with something arguably more valuable than pole position itself: the feeling that he has rediscovered his mojo.

After a difficult spell of setbacks and frustration, the Mercedes driver delivered a commanding lap in Barcelona to take pole for Sunday’s event, edging Lewis Hamilton by 0.064 seconds in a tight, high-quality qualifying battle.

It was a performance that not only halted Kimi Antonelli’s recent run of form within Mercedes, but also marked a personal turning point for Russell, who has been searching for stability after a disrupted few races. And in Barcelona, he finally felt it click.

A reset that brought Russell back to life

Russell described his turnaround as the result of a deliberate shift in approach – a conscious return to what has worked for him in the past after a run of difficult weekends.

“I’ve got to be honest, I’m just really happy to be back in my groove over the course of the whole weekend,” said Russell.

“It’s been a difficult few races for me, obviously, bad luck, and there have been some poor performances in there.

“But I went back to an approach that I knew works for me this weekend, and more important than the pole position for me was just seeing every lap of the whole weekend I was in the top two positions. I felt confident, I felt good, and I just felt like my old self again.

“So, regardless of what happened in Q3 where Lewis did an amazing job and also could have got the pole position as well, that was the most important thing for me this weekend.”

That sense of control was evident throughout the weekend, with Russell consistently at the sharp end while Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli struggled to match his pace.

Back to basics, back to confidence

Russell explained that the turnaround was not down to any dramatic breakthrough, but rather a simplification of his approach in a sport where complexity often overwhelms even the smallest detail.

Asked whether the changes were technical or mental, he kept it grounded.

“Car setup, mentality, just going back to basics, really,” he said.

“These cars are so complicated, the tyres are complicated, the power units are complicated, and it’s challenging to get on top of things, especially when I’ve got a guy like this next to me who has been performing so well.

“You’re trying to constantly improve and I think that doing some copy-pasting probably really put me on the back foot.

“So, as I said, this weekend, I’ve just gone in my own direction and that’s what I’ve done in the past for the last few years, and I’m really glad to see it paying off.”

The result was a composed and confident weekend, with Russell back in the form that carried him to victory in Australia at the season opener.

Feeling ‘as one’ with the car again

After a challenging stretch that included several setbacks – some of them out of his control – Russell admitted that Barcelona felt like a return to earlier-season comfort.

Quizzed on whether this was the best he has felt in the car recently, he reflected positively on the reset process.

“It just feels back to what I felt at the start of the year during winter testing, in Barcelona, Bahrain testing, Melbourne, and China. I felt really comfortable in the car, really happy,” he explained.

“Miami was the first weekend where everything felt pretty challenging, and that’s where I think I can accept, and with my direct group of engineers, we can probably accept that we made some wrong decisions in these last three races.

“So as I said, more than this pole position, I’m just glad to feel myself again, feel as one with the car again as I have done for the last few years.”

For Russell, the significance of pole in Barcelona extends beyond Sunday’s starting grid position.

It represents a reset in confidence, a return to clarity, and perhaps most importantly, a reminder of the version of himself that has long been capable of fighting at the very front of Formula 1.
