Norris on the mindset Russell needs to fight Antonelli in title battle

Reigning Formula 1 World Champion Lando Norris believes George Russell’s fight to keep pace with Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli is not only a battle of speed and performance, but also a significant test of mindset.

The McLaren driver knows the situation Russell finds himself in all too well. During his own championship-winning campaign, Norris faced a significant challenge after falling behind in the title race despite opening the season with victory in Melbourne.

His turnaround was driven by a change in approach, embracing a mentality of having nothing to lose as he fought his way back into contention.

Now Russell faces a comparable challenge. With only seven rounds completed, Antonelli has surged ahead by collecting five victories and building a 50-point advantage over his more experienced teammate.

The Italian’s remarkable form has placed Russell under increasing pressure as he attempts to remain in the championship hunt.

Norris on why one mindset does not fit every driver

Reflecting on the mental shift that helped him secure last year’s championship, Norris explained that the approach was a major factor in changing his fortunes – although he warned that the same solution may not necessarily apply to Russell.

“It certainly made a difference,” Norris told reporters. “Everyone thinks differently. I’ve always put a lot of pressure on myself.

“I don’t know if George puts pressure on himself or doesn’t or feels it or not. I don’t know what situation he is necessarily in now.”

Norris highlighted the contrast between his own position heading into the decisive stages of last season and the circumstances facing Russell, suggesting the Mercedes driver’s challenge comes from a different starting point.

“He’s also always been quite a confident guy at the same time,” Norris explained.

“Whereas last year I went from not much confidence to, ‘what have I got to lose now?’ He’s gone from feeling quite confident to maybe losing some of that confidence.”

The McLaren charger stressed that managing the pressure of a title battle is a personal process, with each driver needing to find the balance that allows them to perform at their best.

“Maybe now, getting to that point, every driver has to find their own way of doing it. It’s not one thing works for all,” Norris said.

“It’s tough to know exactly what you’ve got to do in that situation. Do you put more pressure on yourself? Do you try and feel none of it?”

Antonelli’s form adds another layer to Russell’s challenge

Norris also pointed out that being labelled a championship contender can bring a different type of pressure, with expectations rising as soon as a driver is viewed as a genuine title threat.

While Russell must manage the expectations surrounding his own title hopes, Norris believes Antonelli’s performances have been a major factor in intensifying the battle. The young Italian has exceeded many expectations and has consistently delivered alongside his teammate.

“There are a lot of things to think about as soon as someone says you’re a title contender and you’re in that situation,” Norris explained.

“He’s also got a team-mate who’s doing a pretty unbelievable job. Probably better than I would say most people were expecting in here.

“He’s got pressure from having a very good team-mate and someone who’s challenging him incredibly well, not making any mistakes. And then you’ve got your own challenge of just getting the most out of yourself.”

As the season moves towards a crucial phase, Russell faces the challenge of stopping Antonelli’s momentum while finding the right mental approach to mount a championship comeback.

Norris’ experience shows that confidence, pressure management and self-belief can all play decisive roles – but the reigning champion knows there is no universal formula for conquering a title fight.
