Austrian GP: Russell wins it as Verstappen splits Mercedes drivers

George Russell reignited his Formula 1 title challenge by converting pole position into victory at the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg, holding off a charging Max Verstappen to secure his second win of the 2026 season.

The Mercedes driver crossed the finish line 1.6 seconds ahead of the Red Bull driver after controlling much of the race at the Red Bull Ring. Team-mate Kimi Antonelli completed the podium to preserve his championship lead despite missing out on victory.

For Russell, it marked a timely breakthrough after a lean spell since winning the season-opening race in Melbourne. With Antonelli claiming five victories in the intervening rounds, the Briton desperately needed to respond, and he did so with a composed drive from lights to flag.

Russell holds firm as Verstappen charges forward

Starting from pole after edging Charles Leclerc in qualifying, Russell made the perfect getaway while the action exploded behind him.

Antonelli ran wide at Turns 1 and 3 on the opening lap, allowing Lewis Hamilton to snatch third from Ferrari team-mate Leclerc at Turn 5. Antonelli immediately fought back, briefly passing Hamilton at Turn 1 on lap two before another excursion forced him to surrender the position.

The mistake proved costly. Verstappen seized the opportunity, overtaking Antonelli at Turn 5 before dispatching Leclerc one corner later to launch his pursuit of Hamilton.

What followed was one of the race's defining battles. Verstappen attacked repeatedly into Turn 3, only for Hamilton to retaliate through Turns 5 and 6. One exchange even forced the Red Bull onto the gravel, but the four-time world champion refused to relent.

After the opening round of pit stops, Verstappen finally completed the move for second, this time making it stick with a decisive pass at Turn 6 after another dive into the Turn 3 hairpin.

Strategy decides the race

A Virtual Safety Car on lap 25, triggered by Carlos Sainz stopping with a power failure near the pit wall, briefly shuffled the strategic picture.

Hamilton took advantage by switching from hard tyres to softs, while Verstappen, Russell and most of the leaders remained on track. Antonelli had pitted moments before the neutralisation and quickly recovered, reclaiming third from Leclerc on lap 30.

Ferrari's afternoon gradually unravelled as Leclerc slipped backwards, eventually losing further places to Oscar Piastri, Isack Hadjar and Lando Norris.

The decisive moment arrived during the second pit cycle. Russell stopped for fresh hard tyres on lap 44 just as Verstappen had reduced the gap to under two seconds.

Red Bull delayed Verstappen's stop by five laps in an attempt to gain a tyre-life advantage for the closing stages, but the strategy backfired. The Dutchman rejoined around 10 seconds behind Russell, leaving himself too much ground to recover despite significantly reducing the deficit in the closing laps.

Russell remained calm under pressure to seal a long-awaited return to the top step of the podium.

Antonelli finished just three-tenths behind Verstappen in third, while Piastri took fourth ahead of Hamilton.

Hadjar claimed sixth after overtaking Leclerc late on, with Norris also moving past the Ferrari to finish seventh. Leclerc slipped to eighth, while Racing Bulls pair Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad completed the top 10.
