British GP: Antonelli overhauls Hamilton to take first Sprint win

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli delivered another statement performance by claiming his first Sprint victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season, overtaking Lewis Hamilton in a captivating British Grand Prix mad dash at Silverstone.

The Mercedes youngster crossed the finish line 2.7 seconds clear of the Ferrari driver after seizing control in the second half of the 17-lap contest, extending his championship lead in the process.

Hamilton and Antonelli quickly established themselves as a class apart, leaving the rest of the field to fight over the final podium position as they disappeared into the distance.

Hamilton leads early as battle rages behind

Starting from pole, Hamilton made a clean getaway and, together with Antonelli, immediately broke clear of the chasing pack. Within just three laps, the leading duo had built a four-second cushion while a frenetic five-car scrap unfolded behind them.

Lando Norris, Max Verstappen, George Russell, Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc traded positions almost every lap as varying energy deployment strategies produced constant overtaking opportunities around Silverstone.

Verstappen swept past Russell at Abbey, while Leclerc fought his way by Piastri at Brooklands in one of several eye-catching exchanges.

As the race settled approaching halfway, Norris finally secured third place, allowing attention to shift to the battle for victory.

Antonelli strikes decisively

Hamilton had stretched his advantage to around one second before Antonelli began piling on the pressure from lap eight. The Italian launched his first attack into Brooklands, only for Hamilton to defend successfully.

The Ferrari driver could only hold off the inevitable for so long.

Antonelli completed a decisive pass on the Hangar Straight before immediately pulling clear, showcasing superior pace over the closing laps to comfortably seal the win.

Behind the leading trio, Russell finished fourth after pulling away from Leclerc, while Verstappen slipped to sixth following a late reshuffle. Piastri claimed seventh and the final Sprint points position went to Liam Lawson.

Lawson survived intense pressure from former team-mate Isack Hadjar after forcing the Red Bull driver wide under braking into Stowe in a controversial defensive move that kept the Racing Bulls driver inside the top eight.

Antonelli's victory increases his championship advantage to 43 points over Russell heading into Sunday's Grand Prix, while Hamilton remains third in the standings, four points behind his fellow Briton after another encouraging display from Ferrari.
