'Listen for that name': Coulthard tips Tsolov as Red Bull’s next F1 star

Red Bull's conveyor belt of young talent continues to deliver, and according to David Coulthard, the energy drink giant is still setting the benchmark when it comes to developing the stars of tomorrow.

With Max Verstappen's long-term future continuing to generate speculation, Red Bull's depth of emerging talent has become an increasingly hot topic.

Isack Hadjar has impressed during his first season with Red Bull alongside the four-time world champion, while Racing Bulls duo Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad have regularly scored valuable points to help propel the Faenza-based outfit to sixth in the constructors' standings.

Meanwhile, another exciting prospect is making an increasingly compelling case for a Formula 1 opportunity.

Bulgarian sensation Nikola Tsolov has surged to the top of the Formula 2 championship after enjoying a clean sweep last weekend at Silverstone, further strengthening his credentials as one of Red Bull's brightest young hopes.

With only four Formula 1 seats across the bulls’ two teams, competition for a place is fierce. But for Coulthard, that is exactly the sort of dilemma every team would like to have.

“It's a good problem to have,” Coulthard said, speaking on the Up to Speed podcast.

“I guess there's always a possibility if they're happy with the others, they could help position him [Tsolov] somewhere else.”

Tsolov earns Coulthard's backing

Red Bull's junior programme has built a formidable reputation over the years, producing world champions such as Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel while giving numerous young drivers their chance on Formula 1's biggest stage.

Coulthard believes that long-standing commitment to nurturing talent remains one of Red Bull's greatest strengths, and he sees no indication that the company intends to scale back its investment.

“Red Bull is ahead of the game in terms of their motorsports investment and drivers over the history of time, if you look at what they've invested and now what the valuations are,” he said.

“I don't think they're thinking 'we're getting to the limit of what we can afford to invest in this'.

Turning his attention to Tsolov, Coulthard made it clear that the Bulgarian is a name Formula 1 fans should keep firmly on their radar.

“It's a good problem to have. Listen for that name, Nikola Tsolov from Bulgaria,” he said. “He drives very well, is great personality out of the car as well, so looking forward to seeing him in F1.”

With Tsolov building momentum at the top of the Formula 2 standings and Red Bull's established stars continuing to perform, the Milton Keynes outfit finds itself in the enviable position of having more top-level prospects than available seats.

If recent history is any guide, however, Red Bull has rarely been afraid to find a pathway for exceptional talent – and Tsolov's latest exploits suggest he could be next in line.
