Verstappen still keeping everyone guessing on Red Bull future

Max Verstappen has once again refused to reveal his hand on his Formula 1 future, choosing instead to keep the spotlight firmly on Red Bull’s fight to recover lost ground.

As speculation continues to swirl around whether the four-time world champion will remain with the Milton Keynes squad beyond his current contract, Verstappen has made one thing clear: his immediate priority is fixing the problems that have dragged Red Bull away from the front of the grid.

The Dutchman has spent the last decade at Red Bull, delivering four consecutive drivers’ championships between 2021 and 2024.

But the team’s once-unquestioned winning strength has faded, with inconsistent performance, reliability issues and high-profile setbacks – including rear-wing failures that contributed to incidents in Austria and Britain – raising questions over whether Verstappen will see out his deal, which runs until 2028.

With links to rival teams continuing to circulate, Verstappen arrived at the Belgian Grand Prix weekend with plenty of questions about his next move. Yet, true to form, he offered little insight into his private thinking.

Verstappen refuses to reveal his next move

Asked at Spa on Thursday directly about reports surrounding his future, Verstappen declined to confirm whether he had already made a decision regarding his Red Bull commitment.

“There’s nothing to say,” Verstappen said.

He then explained why he was unwilling to fuel further speculation.

“I don't want to say yes and no, and this and that about my future. I said already many times that if there was something new, I would say it myself,” he added.

Instead of discussing potential exits, Verstappen turned attention towards the work happening inside Red Bull as the team attempts to solve its current weaknesses and rebuild its competitive edge.

The Dutchman highlighted the importance of maintaining a consistent approach despite setbacks and frustration.

“Now we’re just looking to the future trying to fix current issues that we have on the car, but that's an open discussion,” he said.

“Yes, sometimes you get a little bit disappointed or upset after a race, but for example after Silverstone, you go home and you reset.

“On Wednesday I was back at the factory and then you prepare again for the weekends ahead.

“That's how I've been operating in all the years together. And of course, some years are just a little bit more competitive than others, but in terms of my approach and how we work as a team, nothing really changes.”

Building the future beyond the F1 cockpit

While Verstappen remains non-committal about his own long-term Formula 1 plans, his growing involvement in developing young talent has offered another glimpse into his ambitions away from simply driving.

The Dutchman recently added 15-year-old Belgian prospect Dries Van Langendonck to his Verstappen Racing project, while the teenager remains part of McLaren’s junior programme.

Verstappen believes supporting emerging talent is another important part of his role within motorsport.

“Dries has been a big talent for a long time already in go-karting and I think you can spot quite quickly when someone is a little bit more special than someone else, and I think that has carried on with what he's doing right now in Formula 4," he explained.

“That's why I think it's just very exciting to try and help him, guide him. Of course, hand in hand from McLaren’s side as well, to make the right decisions for his future.

“I mean, he wants to get to Formula 1 and I'm just trying to make sure that will happen in the future. It's just honestly a very exciting project to be part of.”

For now, Verstappen’s message remains carefully controlled. He is not closing doors, nor is he opening them.

While the paddock continues to speculate about what comes next, the reigning champion is keeping his focus on the present: helping Red Bull rediscover its winning formula while quietly shaping the next generation of racing talent.
