Norris targets first-lap recovery mission after Spa grid penalty

Lando Norris is preparing for an aggressive recovery drive at the Belgian Grand Prix, with the McLaren driver insisting a strong start and a productive opening lap will be essential if he is to fight his way back into contention after a 10-place grid penalty.

Norris entered qualifying as one of the favourites at Spa-Francorchamps after consistently showing front-running pace throughout the weekend.

The McLaren driver finished close behind Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli in the practice sessions and looked set to challenge for pole after topping the opening segment of qualifying.

His first flyer in Q3 sparked hopes of pole – on the road – but a mistake on his final effort forced him to settle for third place, the Briton ultimately ending up in P13 on Sunday’s grid after factoring in his engine penalty.

Norris plans attack from outside the front group

Despite the lowly starting position, Norris insists his approach will remain largely unchanged, with the focus on maximising every opportunity rather than overcomplicating the task ahead.

“Honestly, it’s not too different. I mean, you try to do your best in every race,” he said after Saturday’s grid-defining session.

“You put together as many good plans as you can. Clearly, the pace is pretty good. It’s close, so it’s not like we’re easily going to be able to get back in the fight with the top group.

“But, of course, a good start and a good first lap can easily get me back where I want to be quickly. From then on out, it’s just depending on how easy overtaking is and how difficult it is.”

The nature of Spa’s long straights and overtaking opportunities could provide Norris with a chance to recover quickly, but he knows the race could become complicated if rivals are able to defend effectively.

Ready for multiple strategies

Norris acknowledged that his team will need to remain flexible during the race, with different strategic options likely to come into play depending on how easily he can move through traffic.

While a podium challenge may require a near-perfect afternoon, the McLaren driver remains confident that the pace of the MCL40 gives him the tools to make significant progress.

“I don’t think it’s going to be crazy easy, but there’s still a lot of possibilities, you know,” he explained.

“Honestly, it’s not that different because you do the best you can in every race. You’re always attacking. For me, that’s always what works best. I guess we’ll probably come up with a few more scenarios.

“If overtaking is easy or hard and we can’t get back into the top six, seven, eight that quickly, what else can we do to bring us back into the fight. Apart from that, I’m confident we’ll be able to get up there pretty quickly.”

With McLaren showing strong pace throughout the weekend, Norris heads into Sunday’s race believing that the penalty does not have to define his result.

The challenge will be turning that confidence into action from the opening moments. A sharp launch, an aggressive first lap and decisive overtaking could determine whether Norris transforms a compromised grid slot into another strong points haul at Spa.
