Sunday’s reshuffled Belgian GP starting grid

The grid for this afternoon’s Belgian Grand Prix has been completely reshuffled following a flurry of severe mechanical penalties that have penalized five drivers and completely transformed the landscape behind the front row.

While Mercedes phenom Kimi Antonelli celebrates an impressive pole position alongside Red Bull's Max Verstappen, several front-runners and midfield drivers face a massive recovery mission through the field.

The most significant disruptions hit the sharp end of the grid, specifically McLaren and Red Bull.

Lando Norris, who had originally qualified a stellar third, has been knocked down 10 places to 13th after his team equipped his car with a fourth battery of the season.

Poor Isack Hadjar was hit with a staggering 30-place engine penalty, completely derailing his hopes of a strong weekend and burying him on the back row of the grid in 21st.

Midfield drops and back-row math

Further down, Carlos Sainz also suffered a late-stage setback. Following the conclusion of qualifying, his Williams crew was forced to change his battery pack, triggering a 10-place grid penalty that tumbles the Spaniard from 14th down to 19th.

The lower end of the grid provides a fascinating look at how the FIA's penalty system stacks up. Aston Martin's Lance Stroll actually qualified in 22nd and last but was slapped with a 10-place drop.

Remarkably, the Canadian will move up to 20th for the start. This grid-position anomaly is due to his teammate Fernando Alonso absorbing a 20-place drop, combined with Hadjar's massive penalty, sinking both cars behind the Canadian.
