Hungarian GP: Norris claims first McLaren pole of 2026

Lando Norris finally opened his 2026 pole account in spectacular fashion at the Hungaroring, denying Lewis Hamilton by the slimmest of margins to end Mercedes' unbeaten qualifying run this season.

The reigning world champion produced a sensational final lap of 1m17.207s in the dying moments of Q3, beating Hamilton by just 0.012s after finding crucial time through the middle sector and nailing the tricky final sequence of corners.

It marked Norris' first Grand Prix pole position since last year's Las Vegas finale, although the McLaren driver had already claimed sprint pole in Miami earlier this season.

Charles Leclerc completed the top three for Ferrari, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli could do no better than fourth after his final effort was compromised by yellow flags. However, the championship leader might well inherit third given that Hamilton is under investigation for impeding Oscar Piastri.

Hamilton strikes first, Norris responds

Qualifying was always expected to be decided on the final runs as soaring track temperatures approached 50°C, making tyre management through the Hungaroring's long, slippery final sector a critical challenge.

Every leading contender arrived in Q3 with two fresh sets of the soft C5 compound available, setting the stage for a thrilling showdown.

Hamilton drew first blood with a superb 1m17.219s on the opening runs, edging Norris after the McLaren driver lost valuable time with a sizeable slide exiting the final corner. Leclerc slotted into third, just over a tenth behind the Ferrari team-mate.

Mercedes, however, never looked as comfortable as it had throughout much of the season. Both Antonelli and George Russell continued to wrestle with an inconsistent balance on the bumpy Budapest circuit, leaving the Silver Arrows on the back foot.

When the decisive final laps arrived, Hamilton and Leclerc were unable to improve. Norris, by contrast, delivered when it mattered most, producing a blistering second sector before keeping the rear tyres alive through the final corners to snatch pole at the flag.

Antonelli denied, Verstappen spins

Antonelli found a little more pace on his final attempt but encountered yellow flags after Max Verstappen spun at the final corner, ending any hopes of challenging the front row.

Oscar Piastri, who had struggled to match Norris all weekend, qualified fifth, while Verstappen's spin left the Red Bull driver sixth ahead of Russell, who was also caught out by the late yellow flags but admitted he had not been improving anyway.

Isack Hadjar recovered from an eventful session to secure eighth after spinning during Q2, while Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad and Audi's Nico Hulkenberg impressed by completing the top 10.

Aston Martin takes a step forward

Q2 delivered one of the day's biggest stories as Aston Martin finally broke into the second phase of qualifying thanks to its heavily upgraded AMR26.

Fernando Alonso cleverly completed his qualifying laps early to avoid traffic, but the Spaniard ultimately missed out on Q3 in 16th after the track evolved significantly in the closing minutes.

Liam Lawson fell in Q2 after describing his Racing Bulls as "undriveable", while Alpine pair Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto also exited alongside Gabriel Bortoleto and Haas driver Esteban Ocon.

Norris had comfortably topped Q1 with a 1m18.277s, while Ferrari confidently progressed on the medium tyre, Hamilton comfortably advancing despite not using the soft compound.

Aston Martin's encouraging pace was enough to lift the Silverstone squad clear of the back row, but Williams endured another miserable qualifying. Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon could manage only 18th and 19th respectively, with Albon left perplexed by the constantly shifting balance of the FW48.
