Antonelli: ‘Still a long way to reach Verstappen and Norris’ level’

Kimi Antonelli is sitting comfortably at the top of Formula 1’s 2026 Drivers’ Championship standings, but the Mercedes sensation insists he still has plenty of ground to cover before he can consider himself on the same level as Max Verstappen and Lando Norris.

The Italian has enjoyed a sensational breakthrough campaign in his second year in F1, transforming Mercedes’ strong start to the new regulations era into a dominant championship position.

With six victories from the opening 11 rounds and a 50-point advantage heading into the summer break, Antonelli has emerged as the clear title favourite.

Yet despite his remarkable consistency, the 19-year-old is refusing to compare himself with the benchmark drivers of the current generation.

A dream first half, but more to learn

Antonelli’s rise has been built on an impressive run of results that began with his maiden F1 triumph in China, a milestone achievement that launched a streak of five consecutive wins.

He has also finished on the podium in all but two races, with retirements at Barcelona and Silverstone caused by mechanical issues rather than performance setbacks.

Asked to assess his season so far after finishing second at the Hungarian Grand Prix just before the sport’s summer break, Antonelli remained grounded.

“Well, I don’t really like judging, but I feel like I’ve done a good first half,” he said. “But, as Lando and Max said, it’s really hard to compare car to car.

“So, I feel like I’m doing a great job, but there’s still a long way to reach their level. So, still lots of work to do.”

The comments underline Antonelli’s mindset despite Mercedes’ early advantage in the new rules cycle.

While pre-season expectations had placed team-mate George Russell as the stronger championship contender, Antonelli has consistently delivered the bigger results.

Making the most of Mercedes’ opportunity

The youngster’s current position is a dramatic turnaround from his difficult rookie campaign in 2025, when his rapid promotion to Mercedes attracted plenty of scrutiny.

Antonelli credits both the team’s progress and his own ability to maximise every opportunity for his stunning start to 2026.

“Well, for sure, I did not expect to find myself in this position,” Antonelli added.

“But, you know, the car has been extremely good, the team has done an incredible job and, on my side, I try to maximise every opportunity I have.

“Of course, there’s still lots of work to do, lots to learn, but it was a good first half of the season.

“Now I’m looking forward to the second half, and we’re just going to keep pushing.”

With the championship lead firmly in his hands, Antonelli’s next challenge is not simply defending his advantage – it is continuing the rapid development that could eventually place him among F1’s elite.
