Pourchaire reignites single-seater career with Opel in Formula E

Former FIA Formula 2 champion Theo Pourchaire is back in the single-seater saddle, with the Opel GSE Formula E Team confirming him for the all-electric series’ groundbreaking GEN4 era that will kick off at the end of this year.

The news is a career reboot for the 22-year-old Frenchman who worked within Sauber’s F1 driver programme and later broadened his experience in IndyCar, the European Le Mans Series and the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Yet for all his talent, Formula 1 never offered him a race seat. It remains one of the harsher realities of modern motorsport: a driver widely regarded as one of the brightest talents of his generation was ultimately overlooked by the category he had spent years targeting.

Formula E now offers the chance to rebuild momentum.

GEN4 arrives with a bang

The timing is significant. Pourchaire will debut alongside Formula E’s new GEN4 car, a machine expected to exceed 335kph, sprint from 0-100kph in around 1.8 seconds and feature permanent all-wheel drive — a first for a single-seater racing series.

“It feels great to be joining the Opel GSE Formula E Team and the Opel family – an iconic brand with a rich racing history which is now making a name for itself in the World Championship,” he said.

“It’s the next step in my career and the biggest single-seater opportunity I’ve had so far.

“The new GEN4 generation is a perfect fit for my transition from Formula 2: more power, all-wheel drive and incredible acceleration – that’s exactly the kind of car I love. I want to learn, continue developing further and I will give my all from day one to ensure Opel’s succeed.”

Pourchaire has already shown encouraging speed in Formula E rookie outings, notably finishing second in the Miami Rookie Free Practice session, just 0.093s off the fastest time.

For Opel, the GEN4 era begins with a proven champion. For Pourchaire, it begins with something he has not had for a while: a clear road forward.
