Montoya reveals Russell’s unexpected Antonelli problem

George Russell’s battle against Kimi Antonelli at Mercedes is already a daunting challenge on pure performance grounds. But according to Juan Pablo Montoya, the Briton faces another unexpected obstacle: Antonelli is simply too easy to like.

The 19-year-old Italian has exploded onto the 2026 scene, emerging as one of Formula 1’s defining talents and building a commanding lead in the Drivers’ standings over his Mercedes team-mate.

With six victories already under his belt, including a run of five consecutive wins, Antonelli has turned what was expected to be a learning season into a championship-leading campaign.

Russell, meanwhile, has endured a complicated year. Although Mercedes’ power unit issues have not helped his cause, the seven-time race winner has also struggled at times to match Antonelli’s outright speed.

For Montoya, that gap is the key factor in the internal Mercedes fight.

Antonelli’s other big advantage? Being ‘likeable’

Speaking about the team-mate rivalry, Montoya believes Russell’s first task is straightforward: he must close the performance gap. If he does, the pressure could start shifting back onto the young Italian.

“The dynamic is difficult, because Kimi is bloody quick, and he’s also a very likeable guy,” Montoya told the official F1 website.

“When the guy is quick and is an ***hole, it’s so much easier to go against him, and to build that rage to create the momentum to destroy him.

“But when the guy is so nice… I think George needs to figure out a way to match Kimi. If he matches Kimi, he’s going to put Kimi in an uncomfortable position.”

It is a fascinating psychological battle. Russell cannot simply rely on frustration or resentment to fuel his comeback because, as Montoya points out, Antonelli does not fit the traditional image of a dominant young rival who invites hostility.

The Italian’s speed is intimidating, but his personality makes the fight harder to turn personal.

The pressure will eventually arrive

Montoya believes Antonelli’s current dominance does not mean the teenager is untouchable. If Russell can consistently reach the same level of performance, mistakes could begin to appear.

"If George can get there, Kimi will try to find a way to beat him again,” Montoya concluded. “I think it might force Kimi into a difficult situation and making mistakes."

For Montoya, even the fastest drivers can be pushed into uncomfortable territory when a rival starts applying sustained pressure.

Antonelli has already shown remarkable maturity, but Formula 1 has a habit of exposing every weakness eventually. Russell’s mission is clear – find the missing pace, and force Mercedes’ young star into a fight he has not yet had to face.
