Russell announces engagement in romantic beachside proposal

George Russell has added a sparkling new milestone to his life away from Formula 1, announcing his engagement to long-time partner Carmen Montero Mundt with a romantic beachside proposal that quickly delighted the paddock.

The Mercedes driver kept the reveal charmingly simple, posting a series of photos from the occasion on social media alongside nothing more than a ring emoji and a white heart.

The images told the rest of the story: a candlelit dinner on the sand, the sea in the background, and a very happy couple at the centre of it all.

For a man whose world is usually measured in lap times, tyre temperatures and thousandths of a second, this was a rather different kind of victory lap.

From paddock regular to fiancée

Russell and Montero Mundt began dating in early 2020 after being introduced by a mutual friend. Since then, she has become a familiar face around Formula 1, regularly accompanying Russell to race weekends and offering a calm presence amid the sport’s constant noise.

Montero Mundt, originally from Spain, moved to the United Kingdom at 18 to continue her studies and later graduated from the University of Westminster with a degree in business management and finance. She works in the financial sector and recently launched her own skincare brand, Barriers.

Russell has often spoken warmly about the role she plays in his life, and in June he all but waved a chequered flag at the future.

“Carmen brings me stability when it comes to racing and also a way to disconnect,” he told The Times.

“Without doubt she’s my future. So [I hope we’ll be married] in due course. It won’t be next week, but it won’t be longer than five years. So somewhere in that timeframe.”

As it turns out, the countdown moved rather more quickly than many fans expected.

Congratulations flood in

The engagement announcement triggered an immediate outpouring of messages from across Formula 1.

Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli was among the first to respond, writing: “Congratulations to you both, mate.”

Pierre Gasly, the Mercedes team, Williams, Formula 1 itself and Lily Muni He — fiancée of Russell’s friend Alex Albon — were also among those sending their best wishes.

‘Likes’ on Instagram from Charles, Leclerc, Lando Norris, Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez and many others followed suit.

The reaction reflected how popular the couple have become within the paddock, where Montero Mundt is known not only as Russell’s partner but also as a supportive and grounded figure amid the sport’s whirlwind lifestyle.

Russell may be navigating a difficult spell with Mercedes, but away from the circuit the 28-year-old has found a welcome reason to smile. In the middle of a challenging Formula 1 season, his beachside proposal offered a reminder that not every important milestone is measured by points, podiums or lap times.
