Wehrlein survives London chaos to seal second Formula E crown

Pascal Wehrlein has done it again – but the Porsche charger had to endure a rollercoaster finale in London before finally being crowned ABB FIA Formula E World Champion for a second time.

The Season 12 title fight produced enough twists and turns to keep everyone guessing until the chequered flag.

While DS PENSKE’s Taylor Barnard stormed to a breakthrough victory, Wehrlein survived a late collapse in the standings to become only the second two-time champion in Formula E history, joining Jean-Eric Vergne.

A title fight turned upside down

Wehrlein entered the finale holding the advantage after winning Saturday’s round 16, but his title defence suddenly looked to be slipping away in the closing stages.

After being instructed to allow Envision’s Sebastien Buemi through at the end of Lap 27, the Porsche driver was then squeezed by Jaguar’s Antonio Felix da Costa.

The combination dropped Wehrlein to 12th and outside the points, allowing Jake Dennis to climb into eighth and briefly move ahead in the championship standings. Meanwhile, Mitch Evans was sitting fourth and needed victory to snatch the crown.

The drama intensified when Wehrlein made contact with Envision’s Joel Eriksson at Turn 16 on Lap 31, sending him out of the points once again. But Dennis’ title hopes were about to suffer an even bigger blow.

The Briton was caught up in the ensuing melee and sustained enough damage to end both his race and championship challenge.

Evans, meanwhile, could not find the winning pace he desperately needed.

Barnard steals the show

As the title contenders stumbled, Barnard delivered the drive of the day. The 22-year-old Penske driver timed his final ATTACK MODE activation perfectly, sweeping past Edo Mortara before hunting down polesitter Nyck de Vries.

With just two laps remaining, Barnard launched a daring move into the final corner and seized the lead, securing his maiden Formula E victory.

His triumph also made him the youngest race winner in series history at 22 years and 76 days, surpassing Maximilian Guenther, on DS Automobiles’ final Formula E appearance.

Evans had to settle for fourth, leaving Wehrlein to celebrate a remarkable second world title despite finishing outside the points.

Jaguar nevertheless retained the Teams’ World Championship, while Porsche had already secured the Manufacturers’ crown in Tokyo.

For Wehrlein, it was another championship forged in chaos – and another place in Formula E history.
