Mercedes targets elusive Zandvoort win as F1 says farewell

Mercedes heads into Formula 1’s final dance at Zandvoort with one glaring omission still sitting in its record book – and Toto Wolff is hoping the Silver Arrows can finally put that right before the Dutch dunes fall silent.

The iconic venue will stage its final F1 race this weekend, bringing the curtain down on a modern revival that began in 2021.

While Max Verstappen has been the dominant force, winning three times along the shores of the North sea, Mercedes has never managed to conquer the undulating legendary venue since its return to the calendar.

That leaves Wolff with one last opportunity to send Mercedes into Zandvoort folklore.

One final shot at victory

"Zandvoort has been a unique challenge since its return," said team principal Wolff.

"It is a difficult track to master, the fans create an incredible atmosphere, and it has become a race that the teams and drivers look forward to. We have come close but never won there in the modern era.

"This is our final opportunity to change that, and that's a challenge we would like to meet."

The timing could hardly be more intriguing. Mercedes began 2026 as the benchmark team and still leads both championships, but its early hegemony has gradually evaporated as Ferrari, McLaren and others have clawed their way closer.

Reliability has repeatedly robbed the team of points, while the last five races have produced five different winners, with Kimi Antonelli and George Russell both standing on the top step alongside Norris, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.

Wolff knows Mercedes cannot afford another weekend of leaving opportunities untapped.

Mercedes knows the pressure is rising

"We have left points on the table,” the Austrian admitted. “Our rivals have reduced the performance gap, and we know the second half of the year will demand more from us than the first.

“The championships will be decided by execution and the rate of development we can bring to the car across the next 12 races.

"Whilst we are slightly out of step with upgrades compared to our rivals, we have more performance to unlock and a clear development plan to do so."

That combination of unfinished business and growing pressure gives Zandvoort an extra edge.

Mercedes wants the championships, certainly – but Wolff would surely relish leaving the Netherlands with something else crossed off the list.

One final victory. One final celebration among the dunes. One last chance for Mercedes to conquer a circuit that has stubbornly refused to bend to its will.
