Coulthard predicts permanent F1 farewell for Zandvoort

Former F1 driver and commentator David Coulthard shared his perspective on why Zandvoort has most likely reached the end of its modern F1 lifecycle, pointing to the circuit’ss inescapable spatial and financial limitations.

As the Formula 1 paddock prepares for this weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix, a distinct sense of finality hangs over the dunes of Zandvoort.

Returning to the calendar in 2021 after a 35-year hiatus, the venue reignited the passion of local racing fans and provided a vibrant backdrop during Max Verstappen's championship era.

However, with the privately funded promoter choosing not to extend its contract past 2026, this weekend’s event signals the impending conclusion of a historic chapter.

Physical limits and commercial realities

Speaking on a recent episode of the Up to Speed Podcast, Coulthard highlighted the origins of the circuit's return and the structural walls it now faces.

"From my point of view, if we look at how the grand prix came to be, the Dutch prince [prins Bernhard van Oranje] is a motorsport fan along with his partner," the former Red Bull driver explained.

"They were instrumental in bringing the grand prix back to Holland on the wave of Max’s success, and they're limited in what they can do with their facility.

"They're surrounded by a natural park, the sand dunes; they can't expand, they can't grow, and of course Formula 1 is continuing to look for an increase in the revenue from their commercial rights

"So I think it's just got to the point where it's probably not commercially viable for them to keep going as is. And for Formula 1, there are other places. Rwanda and other places that are saying, 'Hey, we want to be part of the Formula 1 family.' And they're going to build facilities that are state-of-the-art."

A lasting legacy on the Dutch coast

Despite the commercial pressures forcing a departure, Coulthard remains deeply fond of the historic venue and its unique atmosphere. His personal connection to the track spans decades, dating back to the early steps of his racing career.

"I actually think that Zandvoort is a brilliant little racetrack,” he said.

“My first international victory as a young driver in Formula 3 happened there, and they've developed one of the best Paddock Clubs down into the first corner because you basically can see the whole of the first corner when you're in the Paddock Club."

As engines prepare to fire up for what looks to be the track's final F1 showcase, Coulthard urged fans and the paddock community to savor the moment before the sport shifts toward new frontiers.

"So there are a lot of things for which we need to say thank you and well done to Zandvoort, but the journey has come to its end, and I don't believe we'll ever go back there with Formula 1.

“So remember this period, ladies and gentlemen,” he concluded.
