George Russell converted pole position into a commanding Sprint victory at Zandvoort on Saturday, leading every lap to claim his third Saturday win of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
The Mercedes driver kept Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and McLaren’s Lando Norris at arm’s length throughout a largely processional 24-lap encounter, with the Dutch Grand Prix’s tight seaside circuit once again proving notoriously difficult for overtaking.
Russell had earned pole on Friday after team-mate Kimi Antonelli suffered floor damage during SQ1, costing the championship leader an estimated 25 points of downforce and leaving him fifth on the grid.

Norris lined up alongside Russell on the front row, with Leclerc and Oscar Piastri occupying the second row.
Antonelli immediately made amends for his qualifying setback, sweeping around the outside of Piastri at Turn 1 to seize fourth.
The Italian then turned his attention to Leclerc, who had opted for soft tyres while the rest of the leading runners started on mediums. Despite the apparent tyre advantage, Antonelli could find no way past as the field settled into formation.
The early laps became a game of patience, with drivers keeping within striking distance while carefully managing their rubber.
The race began to open up on lap 10 when Mercedes gave Russell permission to increase his pace. The leader responded immediately, stretching his advantage over Norris to two seconds and effectively removing any threat to his victory.
Norris, meanwhile, began struggling with his McLaren.
“I’ve got no rear,” he reported over team radio as Leclerc and Antonelli remained firmly planted behind him.
Leclerc eventually found his opportunity on lap 18, diving down the inside of Norris at Turn 1 to claim second. The Ferrari immediately pulled clear, but Norris was still under pressure from Antonelli for the final podium position.
Yet Zandvoort once again demonstrated that following closely is considerably easier than passing. Norris kept Antonelli behind and held on to third, finishing just 0.4 seconds ahead of the Mercedes.
Russell took the chequered flag 1.4 seconds ahead of Leclerc for his third Sprint triumph of the campaign, while Leclerc secured his third Sprint podium of 2026.
Antonelli settled for fourth, followed by Piastri, who finished 4.6 seconds further back. Home favourite Max Verstappen was sixth, just 0.3 seconds behind the second McLaren.
