Dutch GP: Norris beats Mercedes drivers to Zandvoort pole

Lando Norris snatched pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix with a late qualifying charge at Zandvoort, edging Sprint winner George Russell and championship leader Kimi Antonelli in a thrilling finale to Saturday’s session.

The reigning world champion delivered a 1m11.163s on his final Q3 attempt to beat Russell by 0.102 seconds and give McLaren a clean sweep of the weekend’s qualifying sessions so far.

Oscar Piastri completed the second row, ensuring both papaya cars remain firmly in contention for Sunday’s race.

Norris holds his nerve as rain threatens

Norris had already looked the man to beat after topping Q2, then strengthened his case with a provisional 1m11.344s in Q3. Russell was just 0.151s away, with Piastri third, but the threat of rain suddenly transformed the session.

With showers beginning to fall around the seaside circuit, drivers rushed back onto the track for another attempt. Norris and Russell emerged almost simultaneously and even appeared to race each other during their out-laps with five minutes remaining.

Once they finally found some clear air, the battle was settled by their final flying laps. Norris crossed the line first and found another 0.181s, while Russell could only improve to 1m11.265s.

That allowed Norris to reclaim the top spot after Antonelli had briefly jumped to the summit. The Mercedes driver ultimately finished 0.133s off pole, with Piastri a further 0.142s behind his McLaren team-mate.

Ferrari and Verstappen remain in the hunt

Ferrari locked out the third row, with Lewis Hamilton taking fifth and Charles Leclerc sixth. Hamilton was 0.331s off Norris, while Leclerc ended the session 0.395s adrift.

Max Verstappen will start seventh in front of his home crowd, lining up alongside Red Bull stand-in Liam Lawson. Gabriel Bortoleto secured an impressive ninth for Audi, while Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad completed the top 10 for his fifth consecutive Q3 appearance.

Pierre Gasly narrowly missed out on Q3 to qualify 11th, ahead of returning Racing Bulls driver Yuki Tsunoda. Nico Hulkenberg was 13th for Audi, followed by Alpine’s Franco Colapinto and Haas’ Esteban Ocon.

Ocon continued his recent qualifying resurgence by again outpacing team-mate Ollie Bearman, who could manage only 20th.

Williams endured another difficult session, with Alex Albon 16th and Carlos Sainz suffering a second straight Q1 elimination in 17th.

Aston Martin’s improved form produced 18th and 19th for Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll respectively, while Cadillac remained rooted to the bottom, Valtteri Bottas qualifying 21st and Sergio Perez 22nd.
